I bought a used Taurus revolver that the previous owner apparently modified and it has a barrel cylinder gap around .0016 (sixteen thousandths). would it be a major undertaking to have a gunsmith remove the barrel and screw it in further to make the gap more reasonable? the gun shoots fine, but has one hell of a fireball from the gap....in 38spcl. Or should I just junk it? If the job was $100 or so I wouldn't mind having it fixed, but I don't think the pistol would be worth $200 even after it was fixed, so if the job was $200 it probably wouldn't be cost effective. Cosmetically, the pistol looks really good to nearly new. |

16 thousandths of an inch is 0.016 inches. 0.0016 inches is excellent gap, 16 ten thousandths, probably too tight for anything but a target pistol. Cost to adjust excess gap is surely greater than $100. Remove the barrel, set back the shoulder 1 turn and hopefully thread to the shoulder, install the barrel to measure the material to remove to set the gap, remove the barrel and machine, recut the cone, install and check the work. Tweak if necessary. The competent gunsmith's labor is worth $100 per hour or very close. |
