finally saved enough funds and the timing is right. other than google, gunbroker etc , whats the best way to find one |
|
Get on Midwest tactical mailing list. There is an email that goes out every Thursday with deals. Sturmgewehr is another great source. Of course gun broker is an option as well. Also quite the NFA item to start with. Make sure you do your research. Surplus 8mm Mauser ammo is hard to find these days. Best of luck! |

Have deep pockets for the ammo like mentioned.. 1200 rds/min is no joke. When you do find one.. make sure there's proof of life and good photos of it that you can see if the rivets look good, etc. poorly built ones can rattle itself apart. Surplus 8mm rounds pop up once in a while. Just avoid certain rounds.. such as Turkey made rounds. They suck and some are overcharged. I was jamming with MKE surplus. I personally like Romanian or Yugo 8mm. Or you have it converted to 7.62 NATO. Honestly I would probably go for a MP5 or a M16 or clone. I tend to shoot the MP5 or the PKM over the MG42. |

I've got setups in 8mm and 7.62Nato and a couple years ago got a setup for 7.62x39. While not as cheap as it used to be, still cheaper than the other two options. |

I honestly couldn't think of a worse 1st NFA firearm to purchase do you know how to inspect and replace recuperator springs? do you know the difference between an anti-bounce and standard bolt? I'm only asking because little things like that could turn your investment into scrap metal |
|
Were there any MG3s sold to the public or made from parts kits before 1986? Quantities of 7.62x51 NATO might be easier to come by. ETA I see above you can convert. Cool. |

A transferable, pre-68 MG-3 purchased by Colt for R&D sold at an RIA auction a few years ago ...... pretty sure it approached 6 figures |
|
The last one I saw sold (Sept 2024) went for $82K. * Original German MG42, C&R transferable. * Mulitple Caliber conversions (8mm, 308 and 7.62x39). * Lafette Tripod. * Extra Barrels. * Couple thousand rounds of ammo. |
The ongoing racial innuendos are not going unnoticed - beware.

You don't really need to "have it converted to 7.62". Changing a 42 over from 8mm to 308 is easy. Barrel swap, feed tray swap and top cover swap. If you want it even easier get a spare 8mm feed tray and put the BRP spacer block in it and use the 8mm top cover. No conversion needed. Just swap a couple parts. I hope to have my Yugo M53 up and running in 8mm and 308 soon. Just need time to work on it. It's a mess. |

I have wanted a mg42 for a long time. back when they were 25K I will be flying out to inspect the gun before i buy it. no way will it be bought sight unseen. |

Im not an expert on the platform but not green behind the ears. i am the type to over educate before doing something. I also have a good friend who was a dealer(prebans), and will lean on him as needed for resources to inspect the weapon before using it. as well as learn what to look for to make sure it doesnt grenade itself. I have the anti bounce bolts. thankfully i bought LOTS of spare parts and barrels when they were much cheaper than now. |

IMHO, get them either headspaced and mounted to a barrel extension or get them that require the shoulder machined to set headspace. I would not recommend getting one that is supposed to be headspace machined to install into your barrel extension. Outfits like BRP have shims if you need to loosen things up. |

Personally I would always convert a 42 to an mg3. Centerfire still has demilled surplus Bund mg3 parts kits available. I managed to pick up a few original mg74 barrels for a customer to whom we sold a gorgeous C&R mg42 last year. |

I have 2 conversion kits(was intended for my two semi 42s) i will be flying wherever the weapon is to inspect it, and watch it ship off to my NFA dealer once payment has been handed off. that said, what are the current scams for NFA? Im pretty pessimistic and trust nothing till it is verified, but every so often Im amazed by the creativity of the scammers. |

If a seller insists on paying immediately with unconventional methods or won’t let you get your mitts on it, it’s a scam. You’re good to go. |

And they get more and more sophisticated with time. There are so many scam NFA dealer websites now too. If the prices are too good and they have deep and wide ranging inventory, those are clues. If the option to pay is bitcoin, run. In my case it wasn’t an NFA item it was a PTR g3 receiver. Not a lot of money and in retrospect it was really obvious I was being scammed. I let my guard down because it was an inexpensive item. As for flying to watch it ship, that’s overboard imo. I’ve been shooting and collecting Mags for 20+ years and have never done that. I’ve also never flown to inspect something, as I only deal with guys who are reputable. If it is a random unknown individual, I will ask for references and speak with those references for high dollar items. Deal with reputable people, don’t get enamored with the idea that you’ll find a deal under market value, and take the time to find the gun you really want. This. something this expensive I am having at a minimum me and a trusted friend who knows the platform well take a look at it in person. I will be holding out to buy from a reputable individual or reseller. If they are well known in the industry and vouch for the condition, i would take that into consideration to not personally go take a look at it, but would probably still go and check it out to make sure it functions and isn't a pile of junk. paranoid, probably. but for something 70-90K... I would sleep better at night knowing its condition before it arrives. |

FWIW I would say get what you want. There are certainly MGs that are cheaper and more versatile but if your heart is set on an MG42 dont settle for something that isnt what you desire. And if you have the cash to buy a $100k MG the cost of ammo likely isnt of any concern like it would be compared to the person who is buying a Mac or some other entry level subgun. |
