Looking for an option to lock up an AR, but have it fairly readily accessible. Ft Knox pistol boxes seem great for handguns, with a simplex lock, however, they don't seem to make something similar for a rifle. Something like Shotlock looks interesting but doesn't get the greatest reviews. |

Hornady makes an in the wall single rifle/shotgun safe that is pretty slick, sold under the name of Snap Safe. The only problem is you have to find an area between wall studs with no wires or water running through them and not an outside wall full of insulation. If you have that, you simply cut out an area between the studs, slide the safe in and screw it to the studs. It has a simple code lock that is very quick to get in and more than enough room for a shotgun or AR with a 20” barrel, I think, 16” for sure.. I did a lot of research on it and was sold, but the walls where I wanted to put it were full of electrical and water lines or an outside wall full of insulation, and that killed the deal for me. link |

Gunvault makes their “AR Vault” which is basically a clamshell that wraps around the receiver. Gun will be visible, but it is fairly secure, not bad for a bedroom rifle. Probably not a great idea for a front hallway. But it has a small footprint, can be bolted to a wall, and can hold a loaded 20 rd mag in it. My Colt wears an Aimpoint, has a 20 rd Pmag in it, and fits in it well. Has some velcro and elastic that I have set up to just barely keep the gun from falling out of the clamshell when it opens, but releases if you rip the gun out. Just another option. Gunvault has always had some of fastest access pistol vaults and this is the same type of thing. |
