Looking at the ZHD312-V2 - ZULUS HD V2 3-12X Digital Night Vision Scope to compliment my PVS-14 for night target shooting. I will do some varmint hunting inside 100yds but mainly want to shoot steel and other targets. Looking for feedback from those who use dig NV for target shooting. Definitely not spending big $ on a pvs30 or thermal if its not neccesary. |

You probably should define "target shooting". Zulus is probably great for casual plinking. I have posted a few videos of what it looks like shooting rats at night with it on the airgun forum https://www.ar15.com/forums/Armory/This-would-be-awesome-Rat-shoot/54-554296/ Day's 4 and 5 are the DNT Zulus v2 3-12 LRF. Day 7 is a cheapish (3x as expensive as the DNT) 640 core thermal. Normally I would agree thermal is usually better for hunting. But they don't work great in every atmospheric condition - and they generally are better at seeing critters than anything else. For my rat shoots in a chicken shed - I had more fun with the digital night vision. Weak spot with digital NV is you NEED an illuminator at night - but that just made the rats eyes glow. But hog hunting - I can see hogs from 900 yards with thermal. The rat hunt was at 10m - well within the built in illuminators range. I was shooting around a not of stuff in the shed (including through wire mesh) - seeing the "stuff" was very helpful. Plus, a lot of times the rats were just hot blobs (coolish overcast days (so nothing really heated up-stuff was basically invisible in thermal), high humidity really diffusing the thermal signatures)- not all that different shape than chicken heads. Lost a lot of shots trying to figure out it they were rats, or obscured chickens. One night I put 4 shots into a rat, that turned out to be an exposed rafter end that had been in the sun earlier. |
| Thanks for your input and it seems for my use the Zulus NV is the best fit. Hunting would all be inside 100yds but mostly closer on varmints. I plan on doing more night steel plate shooting and general plinking and want something different than my Passive aiming and LAM NV setups. I like the ability to have a dedicated magnified NV optic that can be dual purpose. Not knowing how frequent I'll hunt I do not want to spend considerable more funds on a thermal that might not get much use. I am a novice in the night hunting world and this would be my entry level unit to get my feet wet. |

If you grab a big infrared light to go with it like a sniper hog Hyperion you can see targets way way out there like it’s daylight. Plus side is they also make your analog night vision work real real good. Just to get ahead of the replies, your target shooting so no one cares about emissions. I have the Hyperion 66 and a Zulus 520 |
