I could understand if they just stopped working entirely, like most things, and them failing gradually lets you replace them and not be totally screwed, but I have seen this happen 2 or 3 times now with the S&G 6120, which is one of their more high end electronics, with the straight retracting bolt as used by Fort Knox. Plug in the code- sometimes it works, sometimes nothing- no sound, no weak battery noise where it tries to retract the bolt- just nothing. Got locked out of a safe last night, after several attempts it decided that I must be an intruder, despite the correct code being entered each time. Eventually got it open. Playing with it, can get it to open maybe 2/3 of the time. Swapped the keypad with one off a different safe that I had replaced, and same results- sometimes works, sometimes not. Same when I use keypad #1 on the old lock from #2…. Is it the keypad that is failing? Bad signals? Bad lock mechanism and memory? (The lock mechanism stores your code, not the keypad). Unplugged the cable a few times, no change… Anyhow- enough of this shit. Securam Prologic Xtremes ordered for the one that is failing and another, so they will all be the same. This is basically a lock that will work electronically or mechanically, so you won’t be locked out by electronics failing for any reason. And the mechanical portion really should not wear out either, as it seldom gets used, it is just for emergencies. Not sure why I don’t see more dual locks like this, other than folks are cheap. At $370 retail, it hurts, but considering the value of stuff that was stuck inside, it makes sense. Tons of cheap chinese electronic lock sets on Amazon for $50-100, gotta wonder how many of those fail spectacularly…. A new S&G 6120 was $240 or so on Amazon, could have had one here today, but I am sick of them. The Securam Xtreme never has an issue until the battery gets weak, while I have seen S&G’s be touchy from day one. I want to just enter the code one time, not twice, not three times…. From what the pros seem to say, lock sets don’t really hold up that long when used frequently. I would absolutely just use a cheap one and replace it when it fails, except for the whole getting locked out aspect so you actually can’t do it…. So- pay attention to your lock. Even the better ones seem to be less than ideal in my experience. The Xtreme is worth the upgrade if it saves you from needing a locksmith to drill your safe open… |
