I have an original Rhodesian FAL parts kit that came in with remnants of the original paint. Like a damned fool, I scrubbed it all off. Well, last year, I decided to restore it to her original brush-worn glory and did this paint job. It turned out great, especially when you use the bag trick and some scratch pad wear on the high wear areas like the forearm, butt and pistol grip to give it that “been there done that, slotting a few floppies” look. Best part is you don’t have to be good at painting a rifle. It’s actually better if you kind of suck at it to give it a more authentic look. Those young troopies weren’t artists or professional gun painters but young fighting men that were told their rifles stood out in the bush so go paint your rifle. Bands of baby-poop and bluish green were pretty common and even polka-dots were seen. Didn’t matter, just make them not easy to spot black anymore. I got a few pictures of my rifle but not really sure how to post them on here though. |

I've done a few of mine. The 50.00 butt had remnants of original paint. IMO, it's a bit of a less is more approach, and wear it in with use. These pictures are soon after painting. Attached File Attached File |

I've done a half dozen. Dunn Edwards paints work the best and hold up extremely well. |

Nice. I used the last two colors from DE on your order. Use a 2" foam brush. You can use that to put the paint on as nice or as shitty as you want. Per a handful of Rhodesian vets, the following parts were not painted, under pain of disciplinary action: Front, rear, and grenade sights RA serial number on lower and upper receivers Magazine release Bolt carrier Gas regulator Trigger Buttpad, rubber Combo device |

The real stuff was some kind of automotive paint and was matte. It got shiny from all of the handling polishing the paint. There's definitely a variety of ways it was done. Some did it sloppily with rags, socks, etc. Some did similar but with actual brushes. Others tried to make it look nice with various patterns using a brush, and a small number were even airbrushed. |

I got the Rhodie paint kit from Arizona Response Systems a few years back. I think it turned out well: Looks the part when matched with reenactment gear too:  I hiked with it a few times and let it wear a bit before applying a second coat before (sucessfully) hunting with it in '22.

As close to takkies as my budget allowed; Chest rig was a cheap Amazon pick up that I dyed to try and make it look more original. Made by War Replicas, I think. Belt kit is a mix of bastardized Brit webbing, original SA webbing, and reproduction pouches. Rhodie webbing wasn't easy to source at the time, but thankfully What Price Glory has started making some. And I don't think the "black is beautiful" cream was quite for me. I sweated most of it off hiking shortly after that picture was taken, and had smears of the crap all over the cammies. |
Sounds like the camo paste behaved as-advertised. I have a couple of those chest rigs, one painted and one not. They're quite serviceable. |

Attached File Finally did it, but not to my FAL, but close. The rifle’s finish was looking a little shabby, so gave it a shot. Still thinking about how much wear to put into the finish, but overall pretty happy. The theory behind it is an American merc from SOF magazine went to Rhodesia with his own kit and…… And yes that is a combo style device from DSA threaded for the rifle. Always wanted a 223 FAL, so this is it's place holder. Attached File |

I love Vietnam tiger stripe camo look. Striations in the paint. At the beginning of the video. When he dabs and first paints the hand guards. It has that Vietnam. look. Leave it alone. It was perfect to begin with. |

FIRST you have to decide how "NEW" you want it to look. That will determine how much paint you want on the gun vs how worn you want it to look Next you have to remember that none of the originals looked like it came from the factory professionally painted. The guns were typically painted by some private who was on the squad leaders shite list and was given all the squads guns and told to take them to the motor pool to paint them. Chances are he was forced to use a rag dipped in the paint or an old sock (true story). Yes its possible that some detailed to the job, might have taken some extra effort but unlikely, since when he was done, he might have been able to slip away for the rest of the day. Remember they used Land Rover vehicle paint so nothing matte. You can buy the correct colours; but you can also find very close options in hobby stores or even Walmart cheaper. The cheaper paint will wear faster giving you a battle worn look without having to fake it with the "trash bag" method |

All said that they were responsible for painting only their individual rifles/MGs, rather than someone else painting them for them. And no, they were not judged on artistic merit; the shittier, the better. The paint was Dupont Centari, codes Mustard Yellow (YS432A) and Dark Green (DS166A). Indeed, it's a glossy acrylic, and was used by just about every automotive company back in the 60's and 70's. Good luck getting it as it's been out of production for a long while due to VOC crackdowns. Matte painted FNs stick out like a sore thumb and will never look right. I painted my UTV with my Dun Edwards leftovers. In the field, that bit of gloss doesn't matter a bit. One won't notice any shine whatsoever beyond a couple feet. |
