I have an ancestor, born in Nancy, France, who was in Napoleon’s army that invaded Russia. He was captured and sent to one of the ethnic German colonies on the Volga where he died of old age. His capture and banishment are documented in Russian archives. This is likely impossible to answer as there were so many weapons and I assume of different types. But, what would be the musket most representative of the French invasion? |

The .69 cal Charleville M1777 smoothbore. It was a fencepost at 5 feet long, but reliable and considered a good musket for its time. There was also a Calvary carbine version.   You can buy a replica for about $700. Somewhat more for an original, about $3700.
