Where are my utility pouch whores?

Okay, I’m going to dick around a little with the Teardown Systems SnR split front rig. Looking for a couple of utility sustainment pouches. The ones I saw used with the SnR were the A42 Medium pouches from Shepherd Associates, I like that style and the size (6x6x3) seems about right; however, they’re out of stock for MC.

Give me some ideas that are in the same category. Content are general field kit, small binos, maybe NOD, compass, small map, etc.

Preferred: Multicam, MOLLE on the front is an okay option but not a deal breaker. I like a zippered closure, drain holes are preferred. Interior organization isn’t a big priority, but the door is open. External D-rigs or somewhere to dummy cord shit would be a good feature if not MOLLE. Possibly CAT bungee or elastic under neath would be a nice option…

Let me know what you would recommend my tactical utility pouch bitches!

Not a bad suggestion. The only reason for a zippered pouch is better security. If the JSTA pouch was zippered instead of Velcro taht would be ideal and give you space between the pouch and chest rig to add an extra mag or handgun. As much as I like it, that velcro flap kind of sucks for anything dynamic or trying to maintain noise discipline.

Yeah, I was actually looking the slightly larger Tac Pouch 6; that may be a good options and very close dimensions to what I'm looking for.

@ROCK6 look at projected redacted pouches. I’ve hit a gp from them & it easily holds a Nalgene in a nested cup

Crossfire has some utility pouches on their site.

Those ATS options are decent if you want to go the zipper route.

Tactical Tailor and Grey Ghost Gear both have 4th of july sales running still.  The GGG sale is automatically added in your shopping cart.  I think it's 30% off.  And free shipping if I remember right.  TT is 25% off and free shipping?

Emdom has some oldschool zipper utility molle pouches.  And their prices aren't bad.

I'd scour ebay and the EE to see what people have up for sale.  Look at the 'lots' of random pouches people have up for sale.  Alot of people will sell their older pouches in a lot, all at one time.  I've scored really good deals on pouches that way before.

You could always get me to make you some of mine.  I'm about done with this OEM order and hopefully starting to finish up the last half dozen open orders I still have left to do next week.    I do make a really nice nalgene bottle pouch that allows a nesting cup and only takes up 2 columns of molle.......

I've got some stuff in the works and will be carrying some other products from other companies on my site in addition to my stuff.  Stuff not currently offered here in the US.  All belt kit related / adjacent stuff.  Pouches, other belt kit options, packs and stuff...and smocks and some hot weather smocks.  There will be some British style utility pouches among those.

I'm also going to start to talk to the other belt kit adjacent small companies, see if they want to offer their stuff on my site too.  Make it a clearing house for 'belt kit related stuff'.  While I'm all about selling my stuff that I sew, I'm very equal opportunity and willing to rep the other decent small companies stuff.  I can only sew so much of my own stuff, and it's going to be $$$$$ to start up a full sewing factory  (still my long term goal) so I'm down to collab with the other small companies.  Make American Sewing Great Again.

Great suggestions, I’m going to see how the larger EMDOM Wide Load works. I’ve used the same in the past and while it may be a little too big, it has some great features.

I can really appreciate your efforts to coordinate with other cottage industry businesses; I’ve always seen that as a net positive in the small business industry for tactical gear.

I have some ideas as I play around with what’s available and will probably reach back out to you and see what we can come up with. Some initial (unproven) thoughts:

  • Zippered main pouch, possibly some organization inside
Front MOLLE and/or flat zippered compartment. The MOLLE gives you an option to put a phone/GPS mount on the outside for iTAK or mapping use.
Small Velcro loop patch on the outside for small elastic loop organizers (chem-lights, small light, etc.)
Rear Velcro slot for additional magazines, small handgun…(ala JSTA pouch)
Side MOLLE or elastic (below the zipper?) for a CAT, pistol mag…?
Drain hole (I like mesh but prefer the simplicity and more structurally sound drain grommets).

It’s hard to assess until you actually fall in the water, go prone and low craw 50 meters. Some things are nice options, but it’s often nice if you can choose between leaving the front clean/naked or add a few handy items for a more recce type patrol.

Midwest Armor Mag/GP pouch

@sparky-kb,the link didn’t come up for me, hopefully this one is better: Midwest Armor
This interests me, just ordered a couple pouches and will see how they work.

You guys are awesome, reminded me of some old companies and linked me to some new ones I hadn’t heard of.

Will be trying and evaluating:

EMDOM
Tasmanian Tiger (Tac Pouch 6)
Midwest Armor
Shepherd Associated (in Ranger Green)

The area I like to patrol in the back of the property, I have to cross a body of water with my kayak, having a split/chest rig that carriers a little higher and less on the back side makes that easier. The more I experiment with this, the more it reminds me of my older (OD green) split front TT MAV, just slightly lighter and newer material with some slightly better features.

I try really hard to support other companies, especially other small startups.

I'm *decent* at sewing, and enjoy it enough, but I don't want to just be a stitch bitch - I enjoy working on new designs more, and my real strengths are actually running businesses.  One of the things I want to work on is putting up another site, similar to optactical - but selling small cottage factory goods.  IE, a company like Dust Aspirations that makes ALICE straps and belt and a couple other ALICE related products.  Project Redacted is another example - they make utility pouches basically.  Cool.  There's a demand for those.  I prefer fully-fitted lids, but hey - not everyone does, and their pouches are well made.  Sell them too.  Basically, Put together a full product line of lesser-known, cottage industry companies that specialize in 1 or 2 products or whatever.  Basically offer all the best of the cottage industry gear options in one spot.

If I can make a couple core products of my own (or run a small sewing factory here) + run a site like this in addition to my own website dedicated to belt kits + work on random experimental / improvement to current products ideas, I'd be way happier than just working my ass off sewing all the time.  That's my goal.  (I'd also like to support more DIY at home gear sewing - that kinda goes hand-in-hand with the cottage industry support)

See?  Stuff like having to use kayaks are examples of where chest rigs are actually a good idea.

I've been working on this mesh-based split rig chest rig idea for myself.  This is the first prototype - simple MAV style MOLLE base to work on the idea.  Added a bunch of USMC surplus pouches I had - I'm still trying to figure out what to put in that last slot, half wanting it to match just because it has matching pouches already.

I think the way I have this designed, it will breath SIGNIFICANTLY better than any other chest rig I've seen + is actually more stable of a platform than a MAV is.

The basic 6.6 5.11 pouch is a solid product though I don't think they offer it in MC.

I have the small one in tigerstripe, I like it but it's a little quirky. The lid is added on, not part of the back or whatever, and sewn in such a way to want to stay open. 3 Pmags fit as per the website but there's some slop left. I haven't tried normal mags. It'll hold a round Nalgene with the strap loosened up most of the way, a canteen won't fit.

I have one of those as well, pretty meh on it. The belt pass through and the 3 columns should be full width imo. There's interior velcro 👍 and interior loops 👎, the whole thing just seems bulky. Shepherd's similar size pouch has 4 columns and a full width belt pass through, no interior loops and is an inch narrower; that's probably a better bet if you want 2 AR mags in this style pouch. I'm not sure I do anymore. Shepherd also makes a 1r1p pouch, basically a JSTA with a zipper, and a tall 2xAR pouch. One nice thing about the velcro JSTA is that on a belt you can close the flap inside and have a mini dump pouch.

I have a bunch of pictures of both, as well as the HT E&E pouch, here in post 13 and a few after. That HT pouch is pretty big fyi, it can hold 6 PMags or 3 and a round Nalgene. Mine is in that sweet Polish woodland camo.

HT also makes this, 3 columns wide and will zip over the sides of a canteen but not the top (plan is to use shock cord looped from the rear molle). It seems ok but maybe a bit light duty?

Just finished building a lightweight woods belt with almost exclusively savotta pouches.

That's a pretty good solution...thanks!

Depending on the role, I do have a couple of the Platatac flast/152 pouches which are some of the  best for a radio or water bottle (and exccessories). One (or both) of these might make it on this rig, they seem like they stick out a ways, but they're really not bad:

That's always a good play to start. I've looked, but I'm also looking for specific features...enter the tactical cottage industry. We have an abundance of smaller gear sewing bitches that make some very unique gear based on experience and often excellent input. I find them more feature rich rather than overbuilt and often built with newer, lighter, hydrophobic-type materials. Much depends on the users requirements, but I don't agree that an initial look into surplus is always a good place to start. That said ARFCOM Armory/Tactical Gear is a tremendous resource for both old, new, innovative, and cottage industry makers.

I've kind of thought about hybrid pouches. The heavier material as part of the backing and sides, but laminate for the front, bottom and flap (maybe the sides as well?). You lose a little structural support, but you also lose weight. Just think out of the box as a non-stitch bitch

It would be funny to make some pouches out of milk jugs. HDPE is thin, lightweight, durable, and hydrophobic

Naw, not a problem, ideas are always worth throwing out - you never know when a dumb idea is actually genius.

See, I'd want the body of the pouch to be made out of heavier material too - those corners of the pouches wear out really quickly.

What I'm thinking is to use a laminated 500d/500d (or 1000d/500d if that's not enough) cordura body, sewn normally like I sew mine - but what it would do is give you really GOOD structure, lighter than 2 layers of cordura or 1 layer of cordura + webbing on the inside, and be strong enough to hold up well to having traditional molle webbing sewn to it for the main MOLLE attachment system on the back of the pouch.  Then some of that new-tech laminated, non-water absorbing fabric for the lid, since the lid is going to take the least amount of wear and stress overall, but also takes the brunt of the rain (since I am talking about fully fitted lids that wrap all the way around the pouch in this case)

It will cost a decent amount more than regular cordura fabric however.  The fabric costs are going to be maybe double that of 2 layers of cordura, and I don't know if there will be any more cost, time-wise, to working with the stuff.

One of my regular guys who tests stuff for me is buying material so I can make him a couple of mag pouches set up this way.

I think this idea will work out really well, but that people will end up balking at the cost in the end.  But hey, if you want the best of the best......

New take on the Jungle Kit: The SnR Rig

Pics to follow, but I’ve been toying with my Teardown Systems SnR rig. It’s very similar to the old school two-piece MAV but with some twists. Yes, the materials are the laser-cut lighter stuff, but adding magazine inserts to the main slots gives it plenty of rigidity. More to follow on that…

I’ve added a variety of utility pouches, first to just take up real estate, second because I’m testing them out as well. For the far back MOLLE spots on both sides, I’m trying Platatac Small Flask 152 pouches, and they’ll fit a full-size Nalgene if desired. Surprisingly, they work very well and don’t feel bulky or in the way.

For Utility pouches, I do have a Ranger Green Shepherd Associated GP pouch with the slots in the back for a couple of mags. I’m not using that right now as the Midwest Armor GP pouches arrived (in Multicam) and are working pretty well. I’ve also added a Tasmanian Tiger Tac Pouch 6, which is pretty plain, but functional.

Midwest Armor GP 7x6x3
Midwest Armor GP 4x6x2
Tasmanian Tiger Tac Pouch 6
2xPlatatac Small Flask/152 pouches

The SnR is Velcro loop backed with a Velcro hooked cover. I added First Spear tube inserts matched to attach two ACETAC Micro Dangler Pouches. I may replace one with a tubed First Spear foldup dump pouch, but that gives me a good expansion capacity and it doesn’t really get in the way. They’re not the easiest pouches to access, so a FAK may not be the best choice. More to follow as that part of the rig evolves.

I haven’t loaded mags up yet and while the SnR is sized to hold four mags on each side of the rig, I only have three-mag sled inserts. That said, both of Midwest Armor pouches have the same slotted rear design and I’ve added sleds in both (2xmag sled and a single mag elastic insert). The Unobtanium sleds have excellent retention and I will be adding some shock-cord tabs to double up security.

The rig carries well and I haven’t really loaded it up yet to get a balance-perspective. It can ride higher than any of my other belt kits (SMERSH, JayJays, Diz Rig), so it can integrate with the hip belt of a larger pack. The back is pretty naked as well. You can lower it to sit more on the hips and unclip the two-center side-release buckles to go prone easier, take on or off easier, and open up for more airflow.

The SnR does have some unique capabilities for various configurations but used in this configuration, it’s not a new concept, just an updated concept of the Tactical Tailor split front MAV. So far, it’s a hybrid rig that can ride higher on the chest or lower onto the hips, opening front and integrated mag slots.  It’s a little different from the more comprehensive PLCE-type patrolling rigs and not as much capacity, but more functional than other chest rig systems.

More T&E is needed, but I like it so far…

I don't mind laser cut stuff for some things.  It's when it's a load bearing molle attachment that it's been an issue.  Other than the water bottle pouches, it doesn't look like you're loading any of the attachments up with weight.

Follow up with my SnR rig. I kind of just "threw" some stuff in it, so it's not final, but enough to load out and do a little "patrolling" in the back woods. It will take four mags per panel, but my sleds were only three mags; the back sides fit the radio and a slim holster insert for a P365XL just to try some different options.

How high does that thing sit? Pistol would be better as a cross draw imo. Like a shoulder holster.

I've been playing with it. You can lower it all the way to sit on your hips, ala PLCE/JayJays/Diz rigs, or raise it up the ride higher like a chest rig, and be able to wear a pack's waist belt.

I was just filling that placard space with the holster. It's accessible, but isn't a quick draw. Just an option.
