Agreed.  These make great outdoor rigs.  Heck, you could strip it all the way down and use it as a lumbar pack for dayhikes, etc.

Only complaint I’ve had is fitting it with a plate carrier. The padded yoke is great on its own, or over a chest rig, but with plates, getting everything to consistently sit exactly where I want so as not to interfere with my rifle is a bit of a PITA.

Without armor, the DZ rig is tits, no matter what your use case. Kinda wish Crossfire let you configure it how you liked when ordering, butter bar on one side seems better to me than dual mag pouches.

I thought Diz mentioned an under-armor yoke being designed, wonder if that’s coming out soon.

I rigged up a fight light yoke to work and it's comfortable. The thing is with everything you're likely carrying with a belt kit it gets pretty cumbersome even with light plates. Nice to have the ability but I think its a niche application.

Yea, if you're going to run it under a plate carrier, you need a lowpro yoke.  Last I heard, they were working on one (Crossfire).  There ARE options out there, but they're all from overseas, mostly from England.  Most of the British style yokes will work with the Crossfire and similar rigs.

As for letting you pick what to put on it, sure, they could.  But they make such large orders from the factory that makes these, it's significantly cheaper to just make them with the mag pouches.  Most people will keep the mag pouches that they come with, but at least you have the options to swap them out.

The Crossfire rig is significantly cheaper than any of the other rigs of similar quality out there.  Part of how they do that is mass orders + they are all set up the same.

But yea.  If you are doing really rural stuff, especially in hot / humid conditions, it's REALLY REALLY hard to beat these kinds of rigs.

They could offer the option to buy the DZ rig with no front pouches. You would then order what you want a la carte.

Not that CF would make this change, but I believe someone added repair type ladder lock buckles to the belt where the rings are.  I’ve done the same on my belt. My yoke doesn’t have any hardware on it. This helps with still having easy adjustability and comfort for wearing armor over the yoke.

Here's an interesting mod someone did.  Turning an old 1st gen FLC into a set of belt kit.  Really clean and well done too.

Note that those harnesses that are on sale are the Long sized ones.  I made the mistake of ordering one of those first back when I was starting to work on belt kits.  I'm 6' tall, and it's too long for me.

With the standard DZ Rig, have you all tried running it with a low-profile plate carrier?  Does it work better with the PC over or under the belt kit?

I was debating trying a slickster under the DZ harness.

Not the DZ right, but my home grown PLCE rig works better with a Slickster underneath it.  Plus I like being able to take off the rig without having to remove the PC. YMMV

If you want to run it under a plate carrier, you really need a low profile harness.  The standard one is too thick.

I mean, it CAN be done, but if I had to choose, I'd probably run it over the carrier.

I generally don't run belt kit with armor though.  I'd bump up to a split rig chest rig or run it on the carrier itself.

When I was deployed in 2003, we only had the PASGT vests. Bulky but not as heavy as actual plates. The shoulder epaulets let you secure your shoulder harness under them and it became one unit.  Took a bit of getting used to, but eventually it became normal.  I had an LBV, not Alice suspenders. But since I was a SAW gunner, outside of one emergency mag,I only kept pogey bait and pouches of Redman in the mag pouches.  I was still stuck carry my drum mag pouches, canteens, promask, and buttpack on the attached Alice belt.  All that to say a slick carrier with PLCE or Alice gear really isn’t terrible.

It’s doable, but not great. You need the right carrier, and you have to tailor your set up around the yoke.

Carrier over the standard yoke requires you to remove the sternum strap and adjust everything to keep the yoke pads either under the plates, or to the side of them, so you’ve got a consistent place to shoulder your rifle.  You can throw some onewrap around both sets of shoulder straps to keep everything in place, tying the gear together, but it becomes a single unit that’s a bit more complicated to don/doff. Might need to phone a friend to get the onewrap put on exactly where you want it, and see if you can still get out of the gear on your own.

This setup is comfortable, and useful for letting you run the DZ rig without armor, since you don’t have to go through the aggravation of adjusting the yoke. Of course, you could always have someone help with adjustment, and then mark the straps to have preset ride heights, if you’re into that.

Carrier under armor lets you plus up from armor and pistol belt to armor and sustainment gear for a more varied use case. But you have to adjust the yoke to get your ride height where you want it, you’d have to adjust it again to wear it without armor.

Again, you need to get everything set up to have the yoke straps riding along the sides of the plate, and stay put. But you have fewer options for getting the straps to stay put, and the bulk/weight overtop of the plates can make them dig into you, and you’re stacking additional weight on top of the plate carrier straps, so you may end up needing additional padding.

The more I’ve played with it, the more I appreciate the classic side release buckles. You need a quick adjust on belts like this to cinch them down where you need them, or loosen back up to transfer weight to your shoulders. The GT cobras are less than ideal for this, they’re a bitch to loosen.

ETA: I wound up building out a T-rex speed belt into a lighter belt kit specifically for wearing under armor or with other LBE, think chest rigs and backpacks. It works surprisingly well as a modern equivalent to ALICE gear, with a mix of AWS and Crossfire pouches. It’s not the same load carriage as the DZ, but much more user friendly with armor.

Plan on using the DZ when I’m not wearing plates. Only thing I’m still figuring out is the best way to direct attach a CF1 pack to the yoke, someone mentioned straps to do so in another thread, but I didn’t see any additional straps, unless I’m supposed to just use the beavertail attachment to mount the entire pack.

When I get finished with this OEM order I'm doing, I have a couple sets of belt kit for customers and a couple I'm doing for myself - one with British style utility pockets instead of a buttpack.  And the other is going to have a few experiments I'm going to try - including the big one, I'm going to have a FORWARD PULL tightening system on the belt.  IE, instead of pulling sideways away from the buckle to tighten the belt down on the belt kit, you pull forward on each side, tightening it down.  Like some of the modern packs.  This would fix the issue with the Cobra buckles I think, and make it better overall.

But yea, the classic side release buckles are perfectly fine for belt kit work.  I like the Cobra buckles for coolness and they are technically better BUCKLES.  But there is nothing wrong with the side release buckles, and in some ways  (pros and cons) they are better.  (and cheaper too)

I've caught the bug and want to do a low profile version of this (double mag pouches instead of triple, GP pouch instead of butt pack), with either an ATS, HSGI or surplus Marine padded belt. For a dedicated suspenders rig is it better to skip a grippy belt like the HSGI? None of the rigs posted here seem to have that.
I have a Wilder belt pad that is super grippy but only has a few things on it, it seems with some weight on it and suspenders that would be annoying.

I'd skip the grippy part.  For a regular light warbelt, the grippy bit is great, otherwise the belts tend to rise up your torso under stress.  With enough weight, it'll stay down.

I have the ATS warbelt, have had it for years.  It'll work.  I'd PREFER running one with another row of MOLLE on it, but hey.

Honestly brother, straight up advice - get one of the Crossfire DZ Rigs.  The pouches cinch down pretty well with the bungies on there.  And if you don't like the triple pouches, you can always swap on 2 mag pouches.  Why try to reinvent the wheel?  I spent years chasing the optimal belt kit - thus why I have the ATS belt.  The dedicated, designed for belt kit rigs are significantly better than one that 'will work'.  By the time you add up getting all the parts to build out the belt (unless you REALLY shop around HARD, and use British surplus utility pouches, harness, etc.)

If you really want to build your own, SORD has a decent MOLLE base belt at a good price.  Honestly, it'll work better than the ATS belt or similar.

https://www.sordusa.com/belt-pad-patrol-order

They also have double mag pouches with fastex buckles and British style MOLLE Utility Pouches.  Both water bottle sized ones and XL ones.

https://www.sordusa.com/60rd-fastex

https://www.sordusa.com/utility-extra-large

https://www.sordusa.com/utility-large

You'd still need a harness.  The British PLCE (or the Danish copy) are good for the money.  The British Osprey series MOLLE utility / canteen pouches work as utility pouches on these too, and are cheap when available.

The cheapest rig that works would be the SORD belt, surplus PLCE harness, 4 x mag pouches, and 4 x British surplus utility pouches.  You could probably piece one together (not counting the 4 x mag pouches) for $130ish.  Add whatever you want to use for mag pouches.  (If you get the SORD pouches, that's another $140.  So you'd be looking at $270ish range total)

The man speaks truth. If you’re looking at a padded molle belt, just don’t, it’s not worthwhile compared to the DZ unless you need soft armor coverage from a blast belt.

Pricing out a comparable “lightweight” rig costs about the same as the DZ. More, since I tried a couple other pouches and wound up ordering pouches from Crossfire anyway.

I tried a handful of different low profile suspenders. Classic all-elastic from Rothco, Crye, Shaw, Viking tactics, and ATS.

Wanted to try the BFG SOC-C, but those are discontinued. Could probably make a set of them with 1” to 1-1/2” webbing, or maybe tubular nylon, with 1/4” shock cord as the  center ring. Wouldn’t be too hateful to make without a sewing machine if you can deal with having triglides on your back.

Otherwise, ATS are the best, cheap and you can add elastic by just looping 1/4” shock cord around the belt itself as your attachment. 2 strands suffices for a pretty heavy setup, it’s just obnoxious getting the whole thing set up with identical lengths of shock cord, and getting all four legs balanced to the right length.

Crye’s are grossly overpriced and a PITA to acquire, but they’re the next best thing, and easier to set up. Not as nice for a heavy setup, the elastic isn’t as strong as two strands of 1/4” shock cord, so it tends to stay stretched.

The shaw isn’t meant for a lot of weight, and the laser cut section will pop the stitches pretty easily when shrugging on the belt. Probably have the same problems with Unobtainium’s version.

Any suspenders that only support the left and right are basically useless, unless you leave the back of your belt entirely slick. Y backs are okay, but not as good as 4, or 6 point setups, you need to balance the load better to avoid having rotational movement with a Y back.

If you want to do an actual set of belt kit, you ABSOLUTELY want a 6 point (or 8 point harness, which is my preference with most setups)  -  with 4 of the straps in the back.  You want 2 straps going to the buttpack or the utility pouches in the back center.  And one strap in the rear going to each of the water bottle pouches.  This is one the biggest improvements the British did to belt kits.

If you are doing a fully MOLLE belt kit setup, try to attach the straps directly to the pouches, not the belt.  IF the pouches are sewn on (ie, the DZ Rig, JayJays, the ones I make, etc.) then attached to the belt is the way to go.  Otherwise the pouches tend to flop around.  Look at pictures of the old ALICE rigs, where the canteen pouches flopped around REALLY visibly with the regular issue Y or H harnesses.

Honestly, if I were going to go full on budget, instead of trying to make a belt like the ATS belt work, I'd seriously consider looking on ebay for a used set of COMPLETE oldschool, pre-MOLLE PLCE.  IE, a set you won't have to go search for more pouches to complete the set.  Get one with the hippo pad or add one from Sportsman's Guide.  Those old PLCE sets, while not as nice as the newer stuff like the DZ rig, is going to be better than a jerry-rigged setup.  Especially if you spend a little time with a heavy duty needle and thread and put a few dozen stitches in strategic locations  (specifically tying the pouches to the hippo pad, especially around the bottom.  This locks things into place and stops flopping and movement)

If you take your time, you can get a full setup for $100-150ish.  They have them in DPM and MTP.  Which match well with Woodland and Multicam, respectively.

I still recommend the DZ Rig.  But some people are on a budget.

Last year I probably met 60 different guys coming to training events with various differsnt load bearing belt setups, a large number showed up months later with a new DZ rig after checking them out first hand.

I would just save up for a DZ rig personally.

Some guys are pretty set on a split rig, with an open back, to use the hip belt on a longer ruck, which i understand....... but i am not one of those people.

I definitely prefer a real set of belt kit.  However, I see the benefits of a split rig chest rig setup if I know I'm going to be stuck in a vehicle for extended periods of time.  This is why I have an old Tactical Tailor MAV split rig, and have been slowly working on putting together a dedicated, fully sewn 'heavy loadout' split rig for myself.

There are pros and cons, but hey.  We're so lucky to have so many options for gear these days.

Apparently London Bridge Trading Is in the fight too as they are trying to reintroduce the 1195J

They asked on social media for people to send them one to copy, that news unsurprisingly made the rounds as people are mocking them for not having a sample (but i think management changed, many samples were sold over time, prices are High and people Say quality went down).

That said while i think that the 1195 Is a nice LBE (i have worn It) it Just wears like an ephod (which i wore way more and It was outstanding), higher than a plce with the bottom almost flush with your belly button. That makes It unfriendly to packs

Wearing it that high kinda defeats the purpose of going with a belt kit, doesn’t it? Damn thing wears like a chest rig, if a little better balanced. Think SOE made, or hell, probably still makes something similar.

Definitely not going to realize belt kit's greatest advantage with an Ephod-type rig: putting the weight on the hips.

For what it's worth, I ran around the mountains in the snow and mud with my belt kit and the Platatac Billy Pouch. Thoughts:

1) The pistol (bungee retention with Velco One Wrap 'shims' to wedge the slide in place) and pistol mag pouch didn't move one bit.

2) The bottom rear 'body-side' corner of the pouch sticks out at 90* in three axes. That corner would catch on my BDU pants pocket while walking uphill, and it was certainly annoying. I'm going to tack it up and away somehow.

3) There's a lot of volume in the pouch. Make internal dividers with One Wrap to keep things organized.

Overall, very happy with both the concept and the specific pouch.

That's not a bad price.  You'll need two sets of those, but still not a bad price.

PLCE is still a viable option if you are on a budget.  Add a surplus hippo pad (Sportsmans Guide had them cheap last I looked) and it does a pretty solid job.

What are you folks using as a 32 oz. Nalgene pouch on your MOLLE rigs?

I have a coyote brown Tactical Tailor bottle pouch on my Multicam 5.56 rig. I want to replace that with an MC pouch, and most importantly, one that allows for easier bottle reinsertion.

Is there anyplace in the US that has the molle type hippo pads?

As far as non-custom bits go, I think Carcajou in Canadia is the closest you'll find.

SORD USA also has their patrol belt in stock, but that's a one- sizer.

I’ve tried the T-Rex and carcajou pouches, they’re both alright.

The T-Rex is actually kindof annoying to use, though it offers a few different configurations. Tried 32oz nalgenes, and the tacvalve bottles. Anything taller than a basic nalgene cap requires you to use the Y-strap rather than the flap.

The Carcajou is overly simple, but it works. No flap, so the bottle can get much more dirty if you’re crawling through brush or mud. Much easier to draw from, or replace, though.

As an aside, for the Qore ice flask, it fits Crossfire’s Wolverine AK mag pouch perfectly, with a little extra room if you want to stuff something else in with it, or use it in an open top manner.

Their prick pouch also works, but much more snugly, and it sits much taller. I like using this pouch on the beltline for 2 Pmags with ranger plates, or a pair of 40rnd pmags.

The SORD belts are by far the best bang for the buck.  They fit someone that's a 32"-38" pair of jeans fine.  They're roughly the same size as the medium DZ Rig belts.

Surplus British MTP camo Osprey Utility pouches.  I add bungies to wrap around them.  The good thing about these is that most of them fit on just 2 channels of molle.

SORD has some of their utility pouches in stock sometimes.  They have a few different sizes.  They fit on 3 channels of MOLLE however.

I’ve got some HSGI Taco pouches that are great for reinsertion, though maybe not the best for securing and covering the bottle.

I took a look at them but they have no attachment point for the PLCE harness.  The Carcajou belt does and it is a wash on price if I have to source one from the UK.  All I see in the US are the surplus PLCE hip pads and I am kind of meh on them.

I've only used it on a belt, but the mini Maxpedition dump pouch holds a 32oz Nalgene very well; the pull tight is right on the neck of the bottle. I they don't come in MC but it can double as a Nalgene/dump lunch, that versatility might be useful. 🤷

The khaki foliage version might work with MC. A 48oz bottle also fits but then the bungie cord only tightens around the sides of it.

The SORD belt is set up to weave the webbing from the harness through the webbing on the belt, under the pouches that you attach to the belt.  It actually works better than D-rings if you do it right - it's more stable in the end.  There are pictures on their site on how to do it.

Though personally, D-ring attachments points are easier to deal with.  It's super super easy to sew some D-rings onto the SORD belt in the right places for a few dollars worth of materials.  I've done it to the SORD belts that I have.

The surplus hip pads are perfectly fine if you are going to use them with the old-style, non-MOLLE PLCE webbing sets.  They actually work REALLY well if you take a bit and hand-sew a dozen stitches in strategic places, to hold the whole thing together even tighter.

Thanks everyone!

I think it's the Carcajou pouch in the #1 spot and HSGI #3. I've been really happy with the Carcajou buttpacks I have.

The absolute best two I've used are:

1. PLATATAC Accessories Small Flask 152 W/Front Pouch, Multicam (we have stateside distributors)

2. Helikon-Tex Essential Kitbag (tri-zip pouch), Mulitcam

Both will fit the Nalgene 1QT and several other canteen varieties. They can keep them fully sealed up, the Helikon-Tex bag has a little more room, both have extra storage for lid, compact stove, water purification, etc.

I use the Platatac pouches on a chest rig and the Helikon-Tex pouches on a PLCE type rig.

If you want more simple, there are plenty of PLCE type water bottle pouches (from Velocity Systems to JayJays).

I'm gay (just metaphorically speaking) as I don't just want a simple pouch for the bottle, I like to "accessorize" a little. Nesting cup with lid, maybe a spoon, water purification, Bic lighter, maybe a small stove, etc.

Been out of the loop for awhile in here. Last fall I messed with adding a holster and knockoff JSTA pouch. I ordered a simple rentention add-on and it finally came in a couple weeks ago so Im hoping to try this out.

First impression is that the velcro is the only thing holding it and the pocket may be too loose with the weight of the handgun in its current config
