Short story, family member was asked by another widowed family member to unload (make safe) some guns and see what values are on some of them.  The only ones the piqued my interest was this Marlin 336 with a "J" prefix ser# that was in very good condition with just some light handling/safe marks. What am I looking at paying for equivalent guns and just general info? The action is one of the nicest I've experienced with a lever gun. Pictures are the best I could get at the time.

Looking at $400 ( what everyone will try to buy it for) to $900 (top of the market) unfortunately it looks like the top of the recvr has been drilled& tapped, also being a '52 probably is/was a "waffel top".caliber will/ may make a small difference. But WAG w photos only....$525

I would snag that faster than a fat girl grabbing a donut.

It should be a waffle top receiver, they were only made from '48 to '52.  It also looks like an old weaver scope, those are good scopes.

I would grab it, take the scope off to use on something else and replace the rear sight.  That is a good quality, original JM marked Marlin from a time frame when they polished the internals.

Good news/bad news. Someone in the family decided they wanted it which is where it should go so while I wanted it, i'm okay with the reason I'm not getting  it. Just a very cool gun.

The other family member wanting it was subterfuge and my dad just gifted it to me for Xmas .

What scope and mount need to be on this for brush hunting? The current setup is all wrong...

While your Weaver scope would probably work fine for shots out to and a little beyond a hundred yards, for hunting in dense brush I would replace it with a Lyman or Williams receiver mounted peep sight. Your rear sight is already missing and your rifle is factory drilled and tapped for the peep sight.

This is what I would do as well.  With a little practice, a peep sight is just as precise as a scope out to 100-125 yards and usually faster to get on target.

Almost all of my lever-action rifles are set up this way.

It's a bit of a bummer about putting the scope on a waffle top, but still overall neat piece.

@jack_pine_savage and @dekeshooter Specifically what sights are you guys referring to? I get it, I've made open sight shots with an SKS at 100-150 yards and when we first carried ARs at the PD we weren’t allowed optics and had to qualify out to 100 yards so I'm pretty good with peeps/notches.

She cleans up nicely. I was shocked to learn resale was so low on even these really old models. The action is great, machining and finish work is excellent. With Winchesters commanding such high prices I figured these might follow a little behind those prices.Attached File

Midway USA carries both the Lyman 66-M and the Williams Model 5-D receiver sights that your rifle is drilled and tapped for. If you really want to go for the "vintage' look, go on Ebay and search for a Redfield Model 70-M.

I have the Williams 5-D on three Marlin 336 rifles and I find them to be easy to adjust and durable. However, I have had to replace the stock front sight with a taller blade because without doing that the guns shot too high.

Williams doesn't make this easy...says must have ramped front sight so I'm guessing the front sights included with this kit won't fit my OEM bead site that's dovetailed into bbl?

1st 2 rounds @ 100 yds circled with the old 150 gr Core Lokt that came with the gun. Thought my 2nd round missed.. This is with the Weaver 3x it came with.

Very nice!  I was generously gifted an H-prefix (1951, waffle-top) by a friend of my dad's who was handling an estate from another 'nam vet (dad was as well) who was sadly in hospice.

at 50 i've got 3 hornady american whitetail rounds well inside an inch (probably around .6ish C-T-C) but about 4 inches high and a good bit left as well.  It's just the basic dovetailed semi-buckhorn, so I'll probably just get a peep for it.

i was all stoked to reload for it but if it does reasonably accurate shooting at 200 i'm not spending the money  just grab a few boxes and stash em for hunting for the next 10-15 years....
