Last seen in Detroit on 2/5. Let's see what happens when I submit the $25K insurance claim. |
I'm no good at telling people what they want to hear when I dont believe it myself :)

A number of years ago I sent my brother a check via registered mail as a gift when he got married. Sent from WY to CT, the check went MIA in Chicago, had to cancel and resend. Was a big PITA. Also at Christmas time every year, my wife's family in Ireland sends us cards with cash even though we tell them not to. We eventually get cards that are ripped open. The USPS is a wretched hive of scum and villainy. |

Last time I sent a MG via USPS, it was to a customer whose $5000 check had been lost by USPS TWICE trying to send it to me (They eventually showed up about 2 months after being sent). I sent that one registered mail and put a AirTag in it with the speaker disabled. I watched that thing move from building to building. Its a great way to keep up with important things like that. |

That is rare. I ship MGs/RM too all the time with no issues. They are hot potatoes. Each PO wants to sign off on it as fast as possible in my experience. I have never had to file a loss claim, but one time I shipped a Barrett M82 overnight to NY from Dallas. It was snowing in Dallas when I was at the local PO, I was certain no way is this going to get there. I was right, it never left that PO that day. Went out the next day. Went in and they gave me a full refund BEFORE it arrived. |

I never heard from anyone at USPS or ATF. I called and left messages and emailed them both and crickets. I finally got a hold of a person at USPS today who said it's lost, they aren't going to look for it and someday it may end up at the lost and found in GA. I have a hard time believing it's lost. The box had the address written in permanent marker, not a label that could be ripped off. The receipt and Form 3 are in the box with the MG. Not sure when to file for a claim. Whose MG is it if they find it in 3 months? But I only have 30 day to file the claim.. |

USPS is truly broken! Obviously not a machine gun, but I bought a vintage Lodge cast iron cornbread “pan” on eBay a little over a week ago. It was in Lafayette, CO. It was shipped on Feb 16. It went to Denver with an estimated delivery of Feb 20. I figured from Denver to OKC or Tulsa, then to me. Crickets on USPS tracking for a few days, the it shows up in Jersey City, NJ, now crickets again with a “delayed arrival” status. How do you go from outside Denver to outside Tulsa via NJ? Maybe the 3-letter agency will contact you soon?! |

I'm guessing something along the lines of: - it's not lost, we're still looking for it (10 years later) - you can't do that, we won't pay - best we can do is refund your postage - insurance only covers $50 For everyone involved, I hope I'm wrong. |

Just had a G40 MOS "lost" by registered mail,It too ws lost in Detroit. Dealer assured me that he shipped MG that way all the time, not to worry (class 3 dealer). He initiated a claim or what ever on the 3rd week of it showing in Detroit for processing, they had no clue where it was. Last friday my FFL calls me and tells me he has it.....I'm picking it up in the AM, BTW it never left Detroit but did show in Nashville on Thursday ![]() |

Have you filed a theft/loss report with ATF yet? They have a way of jump-starting things within USPS. While this is too late, the Apple trackers are worth their weight in gold. Just include a SASE as a padded envelope and tell the recipient to send it back. And instead of in the package, I’d try to hide it in the gun itself. With the price of transferables these days, I don’t know if I’ll ever ship another one unless it’s to Alaska. Too many stories like this. I hope it turns up. |

Too many stories like this. I hope it turns up. I filed with the theft/loss report on the 18th. Nothing came from it. The only people from ATF who emailed me back were the theft/loss people. I asked if they were going to follow up with USPS and their reply was ---------- Original Message ---------- From: Stolen Firearms Mailbox To: steve , Stolen Firearms Mailbox Date: 02/20/2026 9:03 AM EST Subject: RE: [EXTERNAL] Re: ATF ISSUED INCIDENT NUMBER: Hello, The Stolen Firearms Program processes the report and supplies the FFL with the incident number for their records. From that point, we then alert the field to the matter, and they look into it. The Stolen Firearms Program is unaware of the details as to what the field does to check into the matter. Apparently "the field" doesn't do jack shit either. The buyer is being cool so far. I need to talk to someone at the post office and or ATF about what happens if they find the UZI in 2 months. If I file the insurance claim, can I give that money back if they find it in return for the MG? If I don't file a claim, will they send it back to me? Do I withdraw the form 3 since I have the theft loss number? If the USPS finds it, do they contact me or ATF? And what happens to it if it gets turned over to ATF in 2 months? I'm assuming its lost and not stolen, but it should be next to impossible to lose a registered package. An air tag could be cool, or it could just show me where the thief threw away the box the gun was shipped in. |

USPS has usually been pretty decent to me. Only one instance, and it was a handgun. Disappeared after it left my small town location on a truck. Submitted the trace request at about two weeks later. Week 3 it magically showed up at the dealers two states away. Good luck OP, a MG would be sad to lose! |

Fingers crossed, OP. I recently had a Union Switch & Signal M1911 sit in Detroit nine days with no movement. I understood that there were several steps and chain-of-custody signatures involved to move this firearm through—but was also very weary on having a package sit in such a notorious location. On day ten, I called the USPS and spoke with a very helpful employee. Once she understood the cargo and the associated value, she escalated my information request. Amazingly, the package started its movement to Memphis (another dubious location) the next day. I started receiving text message updates and personal emails from a local employee to keep me in the loop. I was very happy to see the delivery/read the name of the shop owner that received it/got the call that it had arrived. Keep your chin up, it might be alright! |

My friend won a very nice C&R browning 1917a1 from Morphy’s last September. They shipped it USPS about four weeks after the auction wrapped up. This thing ended up getting shuffled around Dallas for two weeks after arriving in the city before it was finally delivered to the store. We were both scared to death it would end up missing, but it did eventually get delivered. I think the shipping process is the worst part of the NFA purchasing experience…. There’s always that nagging feeling that something could go wrong and an irreplaceable item could be lost. Hope your Uzi turns up eventually. |

He was not able to ensure it for the full value because he lived in a rural location in Alaska and didn't have the required fiber reinforced tape to seal the package required for registered mail. He sent it Priority mail and insured it for the maximum of $5,000. It was stolen by a USPS employee who realized the value of the package but probably threw it away when he found out it wasn't cash or jewelry but a stripped M-16 lower being sent in for refinishing. USPS balked at paying the claim but eventually did when presented with actual numbers of a registered lowers value. |

My brother works for USPS. He told me Registered packages are (supposed to be) transferred hand to hand and signed for at every transaction. When not actually being processed, the packages are under lock and key and the responsibility of one person. Minimal hands touch registered packages, or at least he said that's how it is supposed to be. If the person goes on vacation, is out sick, etc. your shit will sit for days on end. I suspect that's what's happening. Hopefully the last person to have hands on has been out sick, on vacation, or otherwise just lazy and your MG is still in secured possession. I recently had three rare barrels just sit idle in Orlando for several days (sent registered mail) until I went to my Post Office and raised hell. The nest morning they were at my Post Office (I'm 45 minutes from Orlando). It seems it damn near impossible to steal or lose a Registered package... but who knows. Have you also filed a complaint with the Postal Inspector? If so I missed that. |

An empty plastic package. Did you know there is actually NOBODY at usps to complain to? No recourse or interest is correction. |

Have you contacted the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General? I hope the package surfaces. |
