| Hello. Local person has a CMP US Navy 7.62 M1 rifle for sale. It has H&R stamp on the barrel. Are these rifles converted by changing the barrel or by using a insert in the barrel? Are these rifle safe to shoot 7.62 NATO like PMC ? I don't like the idea of some type of insert used to change the caliber. |
| Do you have a picture of the barrel markings? I believe H&R participated in both the Mark 2 Mod 0 and Mod 1 Navy rifles, so it could be a bushing conversion or a 7.62 chambered barrel. The bushing barrels are sold through CMP as non shooters, and require a waiver to be signed stating that upon purchase. The Mod 1s are sold as ok to shoot. |

Could be a barrel replacement, could be an insert. Pic of barrel markings would help. Need to look for something like this. Attached File |

I swear, the 7.62 Garand barrels, outside of MK0 and 1 which is obvious, is nutso. Trying to figure just what grade a NM 7.62 barrel is and so on will make you scratch your head until it bleeds. Same goes for the actual Mil Match Garands, to have an actual serial numbered list and who built them would be fantastic. |

I own a .308 M1 Garand built by Donald "Mac" McCoy, from Santee, California. It's a work of art and has less than 100 rounds down the Obermeyer 1:11 twist barrel that he installed. The stock and bedding are amazing. He was a Tier 1 armorer for the U.S. Navy shooting team and his rifles are highly regarded. As far as I know, you are very unlikely to find any .308 M1 Garand that has an insert inside a .30-06 chamber. I you have one, it was probably done by a "gunsmith", not any branch of the military. If you have a bore scope, cheap and easily available, you need to take a look. If it looks like an insert, don't walk, run away. |
My 2 Navy rifles. Top is a Mod 0 with what seems likely to be an original receiver/barrel combo from 1942, converted by H&R with the insert. Bottom is a Mod 1 with a practically new 7.62 chamber barrel (also H&R conversion). Mod 0 barrel markings  Mod 1 barrel markings  Hope this helps! Rob |

Actually the majority of the inserts worked just fine for the majority of those rifles service lives. But enough of them popped out that they decided to make some with new barrels. That’s why they kept making Mod 0s alongside the Mod 1s. The H&R rifles seem to have done a better job keeping the inserts in especially once they started grooving the chambers for them. |
