I have a stock that I designed, as well as an adapter, that both take M249 buttplates and fit AR pattern rifles. My eventual goal is to produce and sell them. Please understand that this is not an advertisement, and they are not currently for sale. These projects as well as a few others have been temporarily shelved because I have some severe health problems (acute pulminary failure- and the docs dont know why; probably from the dirty air and smoke from my workplace though) But- assuming I survive this crap Id like to transition away from heavy equipment maintanance into gun and accessory manufacturing, as well as gunsmithing. Id like to get your guys’s opinions on these designs. No- the stock is not on a belt fed because I cant afford a Lima Six yet, but they would fit right onto a Lima or any other AR lower. The first is based loosely on an M249/ M240 style stock. It isnt adjustable, and fits a milspec tube. The attachment method is unorthodox and needs field testing, which I cant do because I can barely walk up a flight of stairs at the moment.    The next is an adapter to install an M249 buttplate onto a magpul stock. The adapter is designed to be the toughest part of the stock. It is two sandwiched pieces with steel dowel pins, 3 1/4” or 6mm screws, and heavy adhesive all combined to hold it together. The screws that hold the M249 buttplates on in both designs thread into steel inserts that are integrated into the design.   The stock and adapter are both 3d printed in PPA-CF which is about as strong and stable of a material as you can get for a consumer grade 3d printer. A final product would possibly be printed in black PA12, no carbon or glass filler. That way, you wouldnt risk getting the filler impregnated into your face from the cheek weld. PA12 nylon is plenty strong for something like this; and I would have folks field test the dog crap out of them before offering them for sale. Anyways, what do yall think? |

@Postal0311 I have had that thought. The 249 buttplates are getting harder and harder To find, so ultimately Ill have to come up with my own design. They are just the easiest segway into doing this. The adapters for magpul stocks may wind up being milled out of 7075-T6, so theres no reason I couldnt just mill my own buttplate right onto the rear face of them. The shoulder thing that goes up (do they have an actual name?) would probably need to be made out of steel; maybe stamped 11 guage sheet or something. But Id need to come up with some real money to buy a decent sized CNC mill. As far as the actual stock design- what are your guys’s thoughts on it not being adjustable? Its roughly the length of an m4 stock in the 1/3rd to halfway out position. That can be changed easy enough, but with current 3d printing tech making it adjustable is more of a headache than it would be worth. |
I'm about to finish up building my lima6 kit. It's going on this. I don't know if you have multiples to test out, but I'd be game to help out if needed. I wish I had your skills 3d printing. They look awesome. Hope you get better. Focus on that. That is the most important thing.  As far as non-adjustability goes, can you do something like ACE did with the skeleton stock? Add a spacer? That way you have some availability of adjustment.

@cccpnyc Ill keep you in mind if I ever move forward with the project. Id probably do a thread looking for volunteers to test them. Have an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic next tuesday, hopefully they can figure something out. Shims like that are an option, but Id have to totally rework the system that locks the stock onto the buffer tube. Its an unconventional design, no idea if it would hold up to field use. Due to the differences in buffer tubes and tube protrusion from the lower, its harder than one would think to lock a stock onto the buffer tube. I was looking at A1 and A2 buffer tubes to simplify the design, as they just have a threaded hole at the rear of the tube and a single screw holds the stock on. In my opinion, A1 and A2 stocks are too long. An A2 style buffer tube but shorter would be perfect. Ill figure it out eventually. Shouldnt be too hard to find an OEM to make a tube to my specs, just probably expensive. |

@elcunning @fantasticplastic I think the magpul adapters would sell, assuming I could keep the costs down and sell them at a reasonable price. Biggest thing with the current design is that its a little complex to assemble, and Im hesitant to sell them as a kit because somebody would for sure mess the process up. If I screw one up I can just toss it in the scrap bin and start on another. They would come preassmbed to the magpul stock, either with the 249 buttplate installed or ready for one for folks that already have the buttplate. |

Thanks for the heads up on the vltor A5 buffer tube. I had heard that awhile back and forgotten. Ill have to pattern a stock to fit that tube for the lima 6 builders. Son of a gun, I hadnt even thought about the RRA entry stock buffer tube. That would give me a lot more to work with as far as attachment and minimal length restrictions. Could use spacers to adjust length, or make the stocks different lengths. Ill have to reach out to them and see if they will sell the tubes by themselves. Thanks for the info guys! |

@LimaSix Thats good to know! Ill eventually develop a stock with the correct, 3/4” taller comb height to match your uppers. May start on the design in the next week or so, if I can get one printed Id be happy to toss one your way to check out. The magpul stocks can take cheek risers for the height difference, so thats an easy solution. |
