I did a bit of research on these a few years ago but never got around to picking one up and I imagine the market has changed. I've also forgotten quite a bit. Looking for more of a collectible and less of a shooter but don't want a museum piece that I'm afraid to shoot on occasion, budget is flexible, but around $1,000-$1,200 is what I had in mind. |

We've (family, though I'll probably get it) got a Spreewerk (cyq). It's got the wartime holster, too. Just needs that little button, or brad, that holds the flap down. No idea how much it's worth. It's in good shape. |

Spreewerk (code CYQ) are generally the least expensive (or least valued by P38 collectors) because they generally had the roughest finish with more tool marks. Of course if any gun isn’t all-matching that lowers its collector value too. If you just want a shootable example then get a mixmaster and save a bunch of money. All the parts interchange from every maker. (It’s not like Lugers where they hand-fitted stuff.) The most common weirdness is the decocker function not working smoothly so check functionality on that before buying one. |

P38's have been steadily going up over time. About 15 years ago you could pick up a SpreeWerks in decent shape for $400. Now even "good" condition ones are getting in the $800 range and more. CYQ or Spree will have a bit more tooling marks and the finish is not as good as Walther or Mauser. If you look you can find some Russian reworks that look fantastic and can be difficult to spot. Cole's was a big importer of these and they were usually in excellent , sometimes reblued , condition. Late models and dual tones will command higher prices as well as complete rigs with holsters and extra mags. They are fun to shoot and relatively big for a single stack. I have a 43 BYF that I occasionally shoot. Good luck |
