I am strongly considering a Chiappa Alaskan 44 when they are available once again. It has the features I want: Takedown, 16” barrel, full length mag tube, light weight (6lbs), usable sights for my aging eyes and a rust resistant finish (hard chrome). The cost gives me pause as they are at least 1600 new…when they are available. I wish Marlin would make a takedown and Rossi as well. I like my old Interarms Rossi 92 357. If a Rossi takedown was offered I would guess it would be a strong seller. The takedown feature matters to me as I will be traveling with it to places that restrict handguns. Hell, I think lever guns are even legal in Canada, but I am mostly going to be in the US. The other pistol caliber takedown I am aware of is the Winchester 92 Trapper but it is a fancy pants model with a color case receiver and upgraded wood. I would cry like a little girl if I scratched the hell out of that or it got rusty. |

| The .44 Chiappa Wildlands Takedown I recently bought is pretty nice. I can't say it's necessarily worth the $1K I paid, LOL. I would prefer that it had a full length mag and the way it sits now it looks like it's begging to be cut down to 13". The action is super smooth. It's my first 1892 and I can only compare it to a new Marlin 1894 and my 1972 Marlin 336. |

I agree that they are overpriced indeed. One thing I like about the 92 is the ease of single loading oddball rounds due to the accessibility of the breech. I feed in wad cutters in my .357 Rossi that way. I like the new Marlin build quality. If only Marlin made a takedown 1894 SBL… |

Strange about barrel length in Canada- Chiappa made a 12” version 92 that was sold in Canada. Maybe they have different rules for non-citizens? ETA the laws about barrel/overall length in Canada are Byzantine. Non-restricted status is what is needed to be at the lowest level of importation hassle. If the barrel is less than 18”, and it is a center fire and it is a semi auto it is restricted to some degree. If the rifle has a barrel less than 18”, is center fire, and is not a semi auto it is non restricted IF the firearm left the factory with the short barrel. A trapper length barrel should be good to go. There is still the reason for importation to consider, and travel through is allowed as is protection against wild animals in remote areas ( firearms are banned in parks in Canada) as well as hunting. |

I want to say I paid $1300 for my Alaskan .357 maybe 6 years ago or so. I had it threaded for a suppressor and it’s a great little rifle. I also had the stock shortened about 2” because it’s a pretty long lop. Mine doesn’t love 38spl but all .357 runs great. I’d prefer a 1894 style but it’s a good rifle. My only wish is it was blued with a wood stock, but you can’t have it all I guess.

| I have several winchester takedown 92's. It is a super convenient feature. I also had them drilled and tapped for a small pic rail section to mount an optic. There is a company (i forget the name...The Armory?) that will do a takedown mod on Marlins but it takes 12-16 months and is pretty pricey. |

I've owned one in .44 Magnum for almost two years now, and I am pleased with it. The action was a bit stiff right out of the box, but has smoothed nicely after 300-350 rounds fired. Its accuracy is better than or equal to any Marlin, Rossi, or Henry .44 Magnum lever gun I've owned. Mine wears a Crimson Trace red dot and often rides under the back seat of my truck in a Skinner Sights soft case. I haven't had time to develop a load for use through my suppressor (Dead Air Primal 46) yet, but hopefully I will find time in the spring to work something up. I do not regret buying this one at all. |
| Thanks for the review. It ticks the right boxes and I have rediscovered how much fun I have with a 92. I just put a lightened spring kit in my old Interarms Rossi 357 and it made a hell of a difference. I also recently discovered how much more zoom you get in 357 in a rifle over a pistol. |
