TNVC recently completed another Night Fighter 101 class at the Pro Gun Club in Boulder City, NV. We also conducted the Try Before You Buy event on Thursday as well as conducting a Night Fighter 201 at the facility over the weekend. Due to the space at the facility, NF101 and NF201 were never in conflict with each other. Pro Gun is a staple location for us, and we will continue to train here for the foreseeable future. The weather was slightly warm with highs in the 80s and lows in the mid-60s. The dry environment can take its toll on students and equipment alike, but the students kept themselves hydrated and their weapons lubricated resulting in productive training on both nights. Dust at times challenged the goggles and their ability to work, but nothing too bad. In fact, the dusty conditions challenged the students to “leverage their technology” and see how IR and white light can overcome environmental issues. The class was unique in that it did not have any active law enforcement or military personnel and was composed entirely of some very “switched on” civilians. Night one was a full day and the class ran well into the night but the students kept each other motivated during the training and accomplished all the training objectives. There were practically no equipment issues during the class. The wide variety of night vision devices and lasers performed well. Every student present had some form of RDS on their pistols. Word must be getting out that a RDS on top and a white light on the bottom is the preferred setup for using a pistol while under NVGs. However, on two separate occasions ,we did have two student rifles go down hard due to ammunition related issues. It took an instructor pulling the students off the firing line and breaking out tools to get both guns back up and running. Both students were running ammunition from reputable manufacturers and all was new and not remanufactured. Popped primers ended up being the culprit, with one gun having a primer bounce around in the lower log enough that during cycling, a large hcunk of primer lodged in the cam pin and seized the gun so hard that it required a BFH to get the gun apart. A quick cleaning, wipe down and re-lube got the gun back in to action. Bad lot? Made on a Monday or Friday? We haven’t seen this complex malfunction in a long time. Lesson learned – ensure tools ar eon hand, and MAYBE a spare upper. Night Fighter 101 is the first step into becoming someone who is “confident, competent, and capable” in the use of night vision technology and leads directly into our Night Fighter 201, where we continue to expand on the principles learned in Night Fighter 101. Now that the students understand the skills, Night Fighter 201 allows the students to practice the application of those skills. Additionally, several companies generously stepped up to offer students swag and such for their attendance. We really appreciate their generosity and are proud to have them associated with our classes.
