TNVC recently completed a Nightfighter 101 class hosted by the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office and Great Falls Police Department in Great Falls, MT from 17-18 September 2022. This was a sold-out class, and we enjoyed having that many students. The class was evenly mixed between civilians and law enforcement officers.  We love coming to this part of the country, especially at this time of the year. As always, both departments were excellent hosts. The assistance of our hosts enabled us to conduct Nightfighter 101 and 201 classes simultaneously. We couldn’t have done it without them. The weather was AMAZING. Highs in the 70s, and lows in the 50s. It does not get better than this. On night 2 we stalled training for about an hour as a result of a system coming through with high winds, rain, and lightning. The students stuck it out and we accomplished all our training objectives.  We saw a wide spread of night vision devices in this class. Everything from green PVS14s to white phosphor binoculars. No student complained of being under-equipped, we were able to complete all the drills with little difficulty. Each student had capable equipment that fit their requirements and applied it to the training.  There were surprisingly few difficulties with guns and gear in this class. The ratio of suppressed to unsuppressed weapons in this class was nearly 50/50. We even had a student who used a suppressed handgun during the course.  Accuracy exceeded expectations for this class. Students shot very well, and it only got better as the class progressed. Switched on students paying attention to their offsets and making good hits make all the difference in accuracy.  This was the kickoff Nightfighter 101 class for the fall 2022 season. The full classes are nice to see and a blast to teach. We are working on the 2023 calendar and will announce that schedule next month—stay tuned!  We cannot say enough about the hosts--they put on a great effort to make the class successful, and we are grateful for their hard work. We enjoy a special relationship with CCSO and GFPD; what they offer to the area for training is incredible. As always, several companies stepped up to offer students swag and such for their attendance. We appreciate their generosity and are proud to have them associated with our classes. David Gillmore - This was my first class with TNVC. What an amazing staff. They were knowledgeable and patient. Safety was utmost in their minds. The intro PowerPoint was a great history and introduction to NV technology. The hunted/hunter event that followed was quite eye opening. NV is a game changer. A very powerful force multiplier. The staff helped us understand and showed us where white light or IR might work better. Everything is situation based. Major take a ways were 1. See don't just look. 2. Communicate verbally and physically with team members. 3. NV is amazing. I look forward to Night Fighter 201. Thanks for a great experience guys. |

Night Fighter 101 AAR. 3 main takeaways 1. Pvs14 is incredibly capable and an excellent choice 2. Night vision isn't the end all be all system but is just another skill to add to your toolbox 3. Practice practice practice. Added complexity from turning stuff on, light discipline, laser discipline, adjusting gain, focusing your goggle, etc. Little things that aren't that aren't that hard but easy to get jumbled in the dark. Long version: Overall the class was great. Instructors were professional, courteous, knowledgeable, and patient. Safety was paramount and enforced well. The class was majority leo and military, and the first class I've been in when a majority of people had silencers and legit gear. The class began with a PowerPoint presentation going over the history of night vision and the technology behind it. After some gear review and safety, we played hide and seek in a church building using both white light and night vision. Very informative to see pros and cons of both. Depth perception or the lack of under nods was a big deal while navigation around chairs, pianos, stairs, desks, etc. After that was on the range shooting paper targets with both pistol and rifle. Red dot pistol under nods is incredibly easy. We did passive and active aiming with our rifles as well as white light and learned when one works better than the other and vice versa. We learned the techniques for manipulating your firearm by feel only, such as reloads, press checks, etc. Working as a team was introduced and practiced. It followed a crawl, walk, run format by introducing concepts in the daylight hours, practicing them, then running it again under nods at night. It was definitely one of the best classes I've been too and I'm much more confident in myself and my gear now. Highly recommend the course. |

It was great to have you in the class, and you are dead on about the PVS14--it is a great and capable optic, and is still relevant today. We enjoy the variety of environments we are able to utilize in NF101. Hopefully it shows the capabilities of the systems out there and how to make the most of them. You are right about practice--the more comfortable you get with the gear and doing things in the dark, the more fun there is to be had. And not everything has to be about firearms either--we have previous students that mow their lawn, wash the dishes, etc while wearing NVGs. Kinda cool.
