Got this idea that been floating in my head. The barrel extensions on Benelli barrels are threaded in so would it be possible to take a right hand slug barrel and change the extension with a left hand? I might take up gun hunting for deer again and work probably just buy a slug barrel for an existing shotgun instead of buying a straight wall rifle. Benelli only offers RH slug barrels which I guess would work on my wife's gun but I'd rather have a slug barrel for my LH gun. Sent a message to RAS to get their opinion but just wondering if anyone has attempted something like this. |

How will you get the extensions off? There are probably not any barrel extension wrenches available. What are the chances that the threads are all timed the same? What happens if you do the swap and the extension is 180 degrees out of alignment with the sights? Will the bolt headspace? Benelli barrels are expensive. You would be buying two barrels to do this swap. For that price, you could buy a cheap mossberg maverick with a slug barrel. Or a slug barrel for another shotgun you have. I understand wanting the slug barrel for one specific gun, as I have guns I want in a specific configuration that are just not possible. I shoot right handed guns left handed all the time, including 12ga slug guns. I have a mossberg 500 with a slug barrel and a mossberg 930 semi auto with a slug barrel. I shoot them both left handed with no issues. |
Seems like a good way to learn how to fuck-up an expensive gun  If you do it, please keep us informed and post pics. Hopefully some of our resident shotgunsmiths will be along with more definitive answers. ETA- I am also a southpaw. I shoot “right-handed” guns without issue. I bought a left-handed 870 years ago and it just never felt natural to me after being so accustomed to the standard 870 configuration. |

I wasn't planning on doing it myself. Also, you can buy barrel extensions separate so you would only need the one barrel. RAS got back to me and said the one issue this idea would have is that the extractor groove is cut into the threaded area and you would end up having to cut another one on the opposite side. I've decided to scratch this idea and just go back to a RH gun if I decided to get another sluggun. |
