Falls Township Rifle and Pistol Association has a monthly SMG shoot, on the first Sunday of each month. It's located right across the Delaware River from Trenton, NJ, in Pennsylvania. We have a private 25-yard enclosed outdoor range that is reserved just for the shoot. It takes from 9:00am to about Noon. Setup starts at 8:00am if you want to help out, and sight-in is from 8:40am to 9:00am. Generally there are about 10 shooters, so you don't end up waiting too long to shoot. The competition is for pistol caliber MGs only, including 22LR. We don't get too many people shooting binary triggers, but they are welcome. Each "run" or stage of the competition consists of 4 sections of steel plates. The timer sounds, you move down the line shooting in each of the 4 sections of steel plates, removing the magazine as you walk from section to section. There isn't any running or rolling on the ground or any of that kind of stuff, you just pull the mag out of the gun and walk a few feet from section to section. You can choose to run this set up 1-3 times. Cost is $10 for 1 run, $15 for 2 and $20 for 3. A guest fee of $10 is charged if you are a non club member. You will need between 90-150 rounds per run and at least 6 magazines to be on the safe side. I generally bring about 400 rounds of ammo, but I shoot a lot, kind of heavy on the trigger. Some people load mags while they're there, I generally just bring a pile of pre-loaded mags. We shoot for time and accuracy and score is kept, and it's a serious competition. But it is very casual, everyone is friendly. IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER at shooting competitions, this is a great way to get started. I generally shoot pretty OK for accuracy, but I'm kind of slow, so I score in the middle to the bottom of the pack. Naturally, you will need enough experience shooting your MG to be able to load, shoot and handle it in a safe, controlled manner. The club is strict on safety and the range officer who runs the shoot is careful to keep everyone minding the safety rules, so you need not worry about that. It's a very agreeable, fun time. I showed up for one of them, and I've been back every single time since then, probably 20 times now. I wouldn't miss it. It's not a big match, with gun vendors and 200 shooters, so you shouldn't drive up from Florida for it. But if you are within reasonable driving distance, please do give it a try. We have some guys show up that drive in from pretty far away, more than an hour. After the shoot is over, if there is time left before noon, we shoot for fun. Send in the interstate travel form if you are crossing state lines. Usually takes them a month or so to get back to you with an acknowledgement. I drove from OR to Knob Creek for the last KCR MG Shoot with a MG in the trunk. Completely legal. |

You do need "permission" take MGs out of state, but it's a simple form (ATF Form 5320.20), the ATF doesn't really ever deny them, and it's good for a year after you submit it. It's not an issue at all. Everyone who has NFA stuff fills them out. It takes 5 minutes of effort plus a 2-3 week wait. |

I transferred my Thompsons on a C&R license, and I'm pretty sure you can take them wherever you like if you do that. I seem to remember reading that somewhere. |
