Son just turned 18 and off to college. He likes history and older guns more than new ones. At a gun show this weekend, he was looking at M1 carbines. I know nothing except they are cool,little guns. Not sure what/where to look, or what to avoid. Have not even looked at ammo yet. Does CMP sell them. Seen a few on Gun Broker. Guess it is time to learn. This would be a fun that gets shot. So probably not a rare collectible one. Thanks for any help. |

I posted this link on another thread here a few days ago: Atlantic Firearms - Saginaw M1 Carbine They also currently list M1 Carbines from couple of other manufacturers as well, IIRC, Underwood and National Postal Meter. I don’t have any personal experience with Atlantic, but from what I’ve read on Arfcom, they are GTG. |

Expect to pay $1200 for a decent USGI. The Kahr commercial carbines are fine, I have one, it does what a carbine is supposed to do. Avoid Universal. Plainfield can be decent. Both are long out of production. CMP hasn't had carbines in twenty years. The last big batch they had just about melted down the internet. Blue Sky imports have a mixed reputation as does Royal Tiger. Fun guns. Ammo is easy to find tho not a cheap as it once was. Mags, slings, bayonets, etc are also easy to find. Original stuff can be spendy, repos not so much. Some of the repo stuff is actually quite nice. Fifteen round mags work better than the thirty round mags. Accuracy is just ok. They are not tack drivers and never will be. Any USGI you find will be a post war rebuild with a mixture of parts. Anything listed as all original will likely be something "restored" back to original. That's a fetish in carbine world. Also keep in mind many originals came from the factory as mix masters. We made about 6.000,000 carbines in WW2. Eleven major contractors, hundreds of subcontractors. All in the space of about four years. Fascinating chapter in war time production. After the war they were shipped literally around the world. A million went to South Vietnam only. |

I'd dig around (a lot) before splurging but a well made, reliable, accurate, historical rifle is a lot fun. A poorly made or worn out, unreliable one is worth NOT having. |

Do some research. Read up on gi carbines . Biggest pit falls for uneducated buyer. Crooked carbine sellers esp the gun show type are generally scum. 1. There are rewelded carbine receivers. Look for weld at rear sight dove tail or forward of rear sight. 2. Bulged barrels. Lots of carbines out there with ringed barrels from Uncle Bob squib reloads. They will hide this by leaving dirty bore. 3. Cracked receiver. Check receiver ring left side at stock line 4. Bulged out receiver at left locking recess. Carbines are notorious bolt breakers esp the flat bolts. When they do break they can damage receiver . Broken bolt can also shear left receiver locking lug make sure it is still there . 5. Cracked stocks. Rear tang and for end. Replacement gi stocks now $$$$$. |
