I have a little time today, so I stopped by Barnes and Noble. I am flipping through this: Attached File And there is an article on CFE BLK powder. The author went through the Safety Data Sheets (SDS’s) via the Hodgdon website. He figured out that Tin Dioxide is added to the powder. It is a surfactant. DuPont patented the process somewhere between 1910 and 1920. The author went on to say that it works by creating an amalgam of copper and tin. That amalgam is more brittle than just copper alone. So it is breaks free from the barrel easier. |

I have added every issue to both. IMHO, that was one of the best buys of my life. The amount of knowledge I gleaned from those magazines... Is very hard to describe. |

I've managed to amas a significant amount of Handloader and Rifle magazines in digital format over the last year. I agree that the amount I've learned from them is immense. I also have enjoyed reading a lot of the older issues even if the reloading information is of less value. The rules still apply.... |

I had to go subscribe immediately. Haven't had a mag subscription in years. Back in the day gun stores would put their old magazines in a box marked $1. Guns magazine used to have their entire catalog online for download in pdf format, before online subscriptions became a thing. Those went back to the 40's I think, I have them on a harddrive somewhere. Those were neat because there were still a few wild west legends kicking around that they interviewed. |
I'm not here because I make sound financial decisions.

I miss Precision Shooting Magazine from Taunton Press, IIRC. I gave away three Xerox boxes of back issues to someone for free so they'd have something to read. They had a spin-off, too, I think it was Tactical Shooting or some such name. It ran for only a few years (~3). I kept all of those. Can I add Fine Woodworking and Fine Homebuilding in here, too, or is that too far off topic. |

Taunton flew editor Tom Begnal out from Connecticut to my tiny little shop on what had to have been the hottest day of the year. It was his first time using a digital camera to do a shoot. So he was a little anxious about whether the pics were going to turn out when he got back to Connecticut. Back then, it was $150 per page. The article went 3 pages. So I made my truck payment that month. It took about a year from when I first submitted it until it was published. I have had some other minor stuff like questions and/or tips published in other wood working magazines and FHB. Back on topic…. I liked the article on CFE BLK powder because the author had worked for Western powders at some point. So he had the technical background to put together what I thought was a good article. Besides, here in the US it seems like there is only place that really makes powder: St. Marks in Florida. ( Jeeeesshhh…talking about putting all your eggs in one basket! ) So the author’s supposition was thst since it had a “Made in U.S. A.” label on the bottle of CFE BLK that it came from St. Marks. |

I don't use a CFE powder in my precision guns because I like to "regulate" the copper in my barrels - meaning I leave the copper alone until it's a. Issue then I remove it and shoot enough to put another base layer down. This works for me because my precision guns are not high volume shooters and I've noticed more of an accuracy difference with a clean barrel then one with copper. On my ARs (or faster/high volume) I do prefer CFE 223 because I'm not trying to get every bit of accuracy out of it and I clean them more. On pistols I use CFE pistol for most of the same reasons but in both cases it's things like flash suppression then CFE.. has anyone ever had a copper problem in a pistol barrel?? |
