What do I need to know and look at? Besides barrel, bullet check on the end for erosion, what am I looking at? I don’t think any of these were rewelds or drill rifles that were fixed. Have a chance at picking one up. I’m guessing it is a CMP rifle as it comes with several boxes of Lake City Match ammo. |

There are lots of reclaimed drill rifles out there. Easiest place to see a recovered drill rifle tell is normally in the area of the cutoff and the bottom of the receiver ring if it is out of the stock. Many of the major parts will be marked with manufacturers markings. Things like the bolt, bolt sleeve, barrel, etc. Stocks may be marked but are also identifiable by the shape of the band spring cutout. They are also identified by the presence of stock pins or stock bolts. Barrels were made in two and four groove, IIRC, SC had some rifles with six groove barrels at one point in production. Remington trigger guards are often marked, but they are identifiable by the way the guard is stamped around the front guard screw hole. A fair number of repro parts are out there too. |

Get a good Muzzle and throat reading. Check for it being a converted drill rifle. Run the SN and compare it to the potential build date; see if the barrel is within a month or so of that date. |

| Yes, an 03A3 can handle whatever 30-06 you put in it. The receivers on them never had the issues that earlier 03's had (which I think that is quite overrated myself) with brittle receivers. It will do fine with any M2 ball or Lake City Match ammo. Just look for stock splitting at the tang due to the recoil bolts/pins not being effective. I much prefer the set up Mauser's had for stock recoil lugs. |

Took it to shoot today. The bolt is having trouble on closing. From what I can tell the extractor is sitting up too high and is hitting the chamber/hood shoulder when I’m pushing the bolt forward. I can wiggle the bolt and the extractor will move down/clockwise and then the round feeds and fires fine. From what I can tell on the webz I need to tune the extractor or replace it. Anyone have any experience? |
