As the original thread on this topic got archived and many great photos were lost due to the PhotoBucket fiasco, I thought I would start another one on the use of the single shot shotgun for SHTF/Survival use. Recently I picked up a New England Firearms single shot 12 gauge shotgun from another ARFCOM member on the EE. I’ve got a couple of these in my collection already, but I got this one with the intention of making it into a compact, survival style shotgun project. I want something that is strong and simple which I can throw in my truck or on my ATV for when I am out checking fences at the ranch. Yesterday, I took a trip over to a buddy of mine who is a retired gunsmith. He cut down the 28” barrel to 18-1/2” and then squared up and dressed the muzzle. It looks like it came right out of the factory and the overall length of this baby is now a handy 34”. Next on the list is to install a set of Choate stocks (They are on the way as we speak) and I have ordered a green "HI-VIZ" fiber optic front sight to replace the original bead front sight. I also picked up a rear stock shell carrier and a sling. Down the road, I’m looking at getting a .410 adapter for this beast and possibly a .38 special adapter for it as well. Here is the “Before”:  And here is the “After”:  These are the other two NEF single shots I own. The one on the left is a 12 gauge with a 24" barrel with rifle sights. The one one the right is a .410 with a 22" barrel:  This is the first NEF shotgun I owned. It is pictured with the 24" 12 gauge barrel with the rifle sights. I swapped that one out for the standard 28" 12 gauge barrel, installed the Choate Survivor stock set and gave it to my son:  I am hoping that those of you who participated in the previous thread will re-post your shotguns and anyone else who has a single shot shotgun of any gauge will join in to show off the mods you have made. @Mods, Can we get this thread tacked to the forum please? |

| I have an old Sears Ted Williams 12ga, I think it’s actually a Stevens that I leant to a friend for a deer hunt in the snow. Yeah he’s lucky because he somehow packed the barrel with snow and fired a slug. I cut it off at 18 1/2” and dressed the cut with a file. I recently drilled and tapped it for a fiber optic front sight. It’s a handy gun JIC. It’s the first gun I ever owned 48 years ago. |

I threw the web shell carrier on the rear stock: As I mentioned before, I gave my son an NEF single shot with a 12 gauge and 20 gauge barrel a few years ago. He never uses the 20 gauge barrel, so he brought that back to me last night. For some reason, it didn’t lock up on this particular NEF shotgun, but it worked fine on the other two I have. It’s a 25-1/2” barrel with a full choke:  |

I got the Choate stock set and a web sling installed last night. Now I am just waiting on the green fluorescent sight from Midway USA. I also ordered a .410/.45 Colt adapter from Short Lane for it… This is where she will be riding most of the time…😁

For many this may be a gun they already owned from their youth or inherited. Maybe it was a gun they picked up in a private sale for less than $100. In any case, I think these threads are neat because they pay homage to the elegant utility of the Single-Shot Shotgun. My Mom still keeps an old Savage .410 single-shot near her in the house. Certainly not an ideal choice in a HD weapon but she knows how to use it and is confident in her ability to hit what she aims at. Those are the two top factors in any home defense weapon. |

Now that you mention it, I haven't seen a 16 gauge adapter, so I think you are absolutely correct there. While I do have a 20 Gauge barrel that fits two of my NEF's, I think a 20 gauge adapter would be handy. I have a NEF 20 gauge Pardner single shot I keep in my barn with a few rounds of buckshot, birdshot and slugs. It's the classic "barn gun" in every sense of the word. I take care of it, but it really does not matter if it gets scuffed or dinged up a bit. Just keep it oiled enough to retard rust and wipe it off occasionally. For rodent control, the occasional buck down in the field below the barn when I don't have a deer rifle handy, or for walking a fence line should a snake be encountered, great choice. Good for rabbits, too. Standard 26" fixed choke tube. For these purposes, a second shot is really not needed. Also conserves ammo and teaches fundamentals. Great for youth and beginners when my grandkids come to visit. One shell at a time. 3" chamber should the need arise. Its light weight and handles quickly and instinctively. |

A friend of mine got that one for his 20 gauge, I grabbed the cheaper one first to try fit and function. My home range is only 25 yards so it should be decent for that. The one you're talking about is almost the same as a short barreled revolver? |

Yeah, from the looks of it the actual “Rifled” section is only going to be somewhere around an 1-1/2” to 2”. But, I for the range I am planning to use it for (25-30 yards)’ that should be fine. I figured for $25.00 it is worth a try…

I was at Fleet Farm last weekend and saw these little RIA single shots. Plastic "wood grain" brown stocks, and super light. The neat part was that they incorporated a rear sight in the receiver. My latest chop. Ithaca M-66 single shot 12 gauge. I got this for $100 OTD from a local pawn I frequent. It had some pitting at the end of it's 28" barrel. Must of it got cut out and now it's 20 1/2". As much as I like going as short as non-NFA legal, sometimes it doesn't look right. That's why I decided on the 20". The lever just acts as the break action. Still just a single shot. I also found a 12 gauge 38 spl. adaptor I bought a few years ago I can use with it. The front bead I added is probably one of the straighter ones I've ever done, so I'm happy. I have a western style room that I'll probably hang this over the door in.
