Just wanted to share a technique I used for a small project I made. Found a cheap bubble level and decided to make a picatinny mounted level. Used some hand tools and a drill press to whittle this thing out of an old bolt.   Then for finishing I decided to try a blueing technique I read about. I heated the parts up with a torch just past the color range until the steel got to a dull color. Then I dunked it in clean heating oil until cool. I repeated this a couple times and got this finish. Not sure about durability since I haven't been able to get out and use it yet. I'm sure I did something wrong and someone's now angrily yelling at the screen. First time doing something like this and wanted to see how it would turn out. |

Looks good. Nice matte finish, which will hold oil well, though most people don't find it as pretty as a smoothly polished shiny finish. It will be more durable than the pretty shiny finish, though. While it will be fine for your part there, the only warning I would have is you can destroy the hardness of some heat treated parts with this process. If you want the prettiest, shiniest finish try melting some potassium nitrate, stump remover will do the trick. It is hard to melt, but capable of producing a really pretty finish. |
