I just finished a pretty cool 870 armorer's class locally. Hadn't really been giving shotguns much thought to be honest. SBS the Shockwave or find a used 870 to rebuild? |
| The shockwave is definitely a good candidate to SBS. I took my 1st fighting shotgun class with a 1301, I want to take another one with a pump. My shockwave with a Magpull stock and XS Big Dot should do just fine. I wish I could find a metal trigger group for it. |

IF you’re dead set on a Mossberg 500 SBR, the Shockwave is the place to start as the magazine tube is already the proper length. Much more involved to start with a standard 500 if you want the barrel length less that ~15”. The Shockwave also comes factory equipped with the heavy 590 barrel. SBS stamps are $0 (at least until the Dems take control again) and eform 1’s are being processed and approved in about 2weeks or less (my most recent experience) |

With 00 buck, the Federal mini is 6 pellets at 1245fps and the 2 3/4" is 9 pellets at 1325fps. With Federal mini #4 buckshot you get 15 pellets at 1200fps or 27 pellets at 1325fps in the 2 3/4". The Aguila buck is a mixed load with 7 pellets of #4 buck and 4 pellets of #1 buck at 1200fps. Everybody has to make their own choices, hopefully after test patterning their gun with the different loads, but personally I'm good giving up two or three pellets of 00 for more rounds in most situations, including down the staircase to the front door or from the front door to the street. While I wouldn't grab them before the 00, I'd still be comfortable using the Federal #4 minis or the Aquila mixed buck for that role or in a camping or general woods walking gun (no brown bears, polar bears or moose here). The only times I've carried a shotgun deer hunting was on drives and I haven't been on a deer drive since the late eighties; I use a rifle or handgun for deer and hogs as well as my primary defensive arms. Those are just my choices based on how I evaluate my variables and it's doubtful they are applicable to others.  I think wood furniture looks much better but the Magpul is probably the best functional stock I've tried on a defensive style 870 or 500/590, JMO. I do like the looks of that folder though, hmmm.... ETA- LPA makes a variety of differnt shotgun sight including barrel band stye front sights. They have a pretty extensive catalog so you's have to pick out the style and height that you prefer. Defender Tactical, the makers of the aftermarket mini shell kit with lifter, offer a taller bead as do several other manufacturers. I put the Mossberg OEM ghost ring set on a 500 and it's held up fine and I put an XS on a Shockwave without issues. |

Well, except wood furniture.  I have 2 Shockwaves and an Aftershock. Have been wanting to buy a 590S so I can have a Shockwave without the OPSOL plug. Plus turning it into an SBS with no fee is just tits. Right now I have feelers out to see if there is a comfortable folding stock option. Otherwise it's getting a Magpul stock and possibly forend. Would this be a gun I take into battle, walk around on foot with waiting for contact/engagement, etc.? Fuck no!!! But for at home, in the home, etc. this would be a potent weapon! So long as as there's no chance of family anywhere near where the pellets/slugs are impacting...I'm fine patching drywall and painting over blood spatter. |

I say yes, but per above, the birdshead grip is so much fun. I don't think it's completely useless as it is. I kind of want to get a second one, and sbs that one. Shockwaves are cool in all forms though. |

The collapsible stock adapter is from Mesa Tactical (just over $100). It's solid and works well. I've been considering the Chisel folding stock for the Shockwave, but damn, that's expensive. I also don't want to use optics on the Shockwave as I love those ghost ring iron sights. ROCK6 |

I should update this. The new front bead is higher and considerably beefier than stock. The combined safety and rear sight installs easily without disassembling the gun. My gun had the needed steel detent plate (YMMV). The new bead, and dropping the stock about 1/2", corrected my POI. |

ROCK6 Appreciate the info. I pulled this out of the safe. Just not thrilled with the SBM4. But the rear surface is wider than the MP stock. Then again I think I can buy a softer buttpad for a MP stock. Just not a fan of how the SBM4 impacts. Attached File |
