I've had shotguns with colored plastic followers and I have shotguns with blued/park'd dark colored followers. I've kind of always preferred the colored ones. My follower on my new 590 is still a little gritty after running dummies through it in the house.

Any downside to using the Phase 5 vs the more expensive GG&G?

Honestly, if it isn’t broke maybe don’t fix it. I’ve seen people create problems for themselves by “upgrading” followers.

Just my $0.02, YMMV.

I use NDZ aluminum.

I am hesitant to use steel on steel. Though 416 stainless will probably safe in most tubes

I do have the hybrid GG&G follower. No issues.

The factory plastic followers are fine.
If it feels gritty, clean your mag tube.

What gun? For a Mossberg I've found that the factory follower is great if you just spray paint it in red (tape off the sides).

Some of the others I used added too much to the magazine tube and reduced the number of rounds the tube could hold.

I pulled it apart yesterday. There was like dried grease in the cap and tube. Not cosmoline, almost like dried rubber cement.

Flushed it with gun scrub, brushed it out, light coat of oil. Seems smoother.

Brand new gun, straight from Grab a Gun in person pickup, never fired, March 2025 production.

For my 590 20" and my Shockwave I've taken to taking the factory follower and spray painted the top with candy apple red.

That has worked the best for me.

Others have reduced capacity.
