I’ve seen a bunch of threads in the last few months but apparently can’t search correctly. We have a blink battery operated system. Front and back doorbell with 4 exterior cameras added. I’m sick of blowing through batteries. I’m looking for a standalone wired system that will be able to send alerts to a cell phone as well as usb/sd storage. The blink system worked, but the batteries are killing me. I don’t mind running wires through the attic. I don’t know the first thing about splicing into the existing house wiring to directly install and tap inline for the cameras but can learn and that would be ideal. Is that a thing to splice into existing wiring (exterior outlet wiring as an example to splice into it in the attic and mount the camera under the gutters)? I’m sort of going in blind. Gf has a stalker ex that the blink cameras caught him in her backyard from 2-3am and has since been convinced of felony aggravated stalking for his 7-9th ppo violation so it’s sort of imperative to get a “proper” system that just works and sends notifications |

You will want POE. Most of the NVR/camera combos out there will be POE and offer an app solution. That’s the easy way to go. If you want to take a deep dive, join ipcamtalk. It’s the arf of security cameras. They will steer you away from the NVR combos, though. I moved a few moths ago, and my new house had a Wisenet NVR system already installed.it works well, although I am still working on getting the motion detection alerts dialed in. It also has dome cameras, which are not ideal. |

Recording to an NVR does not require internet, regardless of whether you have WiFi or POE cameras. You will need internet to access your cameras remotely, of course. If you have battery powered cameras, they’ll only record events. If you have WiFi cameras that plug into an AC outlet, they can record 24/7. But yeah, each camera will eat some WiFi bandwidth. It may or may not slow down your internet speed. POE cameras will record 24/7 to your NVR. Plug your NVR into a UPS and the cameras will keep recording even if the power goes out. POE is definitely the way to go if you can run the cables. |

Have had a reolink POE system now for about 8 years. Had a hard drive go out on me about a year ago. Contacted them and even though it was out of warranty, they gave me something like 50% off a new one. I have mostly older 4mp cameras. Have a couple 5mp and one of the newer CX410 night color vision cameras. I'm impressed with the night color vision one. The picture is clear and can easily see the color of cars going through a nearby intersection that has a street light on it. This is from the CX410 Attached File |

I've overall been happy with my PoE reolink. I installed an older system I had bought 5ish years ago. I did order one new camera for the front porch but waiting on slightly better weather for the install. The app had an issue starting last oct/Nov were I couldn't get push notifications but it has since been corrected and working again. You do have to fidget with detection and trigger sensitivity but it's great being able to check on the house while I'm at work and see when my kid comes and goes (making sure garage door is shut). I've got a 8 cam NVR and currently only using 5 ports. I want to put one more camera looking down at the driveway for sure and switch out the front door cam for a higher resolution and 2-way talk capabilities. Overall I've been happy. |

Thanks you will have to run a ethernet [cat 6] wire. 1 wire for data and power. if you cant/dont want to run wire then battery and wifi is the only way. but with that you are like the OP, burning through batteries and wifi is easy to interrupt and isnt as reliable. Besides the cameras what else would l need for the recording and storing/backing up? generally a "brain" where stuff is stored, a POE network switch, ethernet wire to hook things up, and cameras. now depending on set up accessories that help mount cameras easier or network box to hold rack mount software can come in. ohhh and maybe subscriptions depending on what rout you go. |

With no power or internet you're going to need solar and battery's to run the system and a hard drive to store data. Trail camera's are cheap so you could purchase quite a few for the cost to set up one conventional camera. If you have cell service at the location look into a cell capable trail cameras for real time notifications. |

I bought a set similar to this, i paid a couple hundred less and they are a dime a dozen, but i've had my system up and running 10 years. Other than replacing two of the 8 cameras, I haven't had a single issue. 8 Channel NVR Security Camera System |

There are some decent off the shelf solutions available as "kits" but when I dove into this several years ago I decided to piece together my system based on my needs. I'm glad I did. I ended up with a 16 channel Hikvision NVR with three hard drives hidden in my house and a network switch hidden in my detached garage. I have 12 cameras around my property (@2 acres) that provide 100% coverage of my property. NVR is connected to network via direct burial CAT6 in 2 inch buried conduit. Several cameras connect directly to the NVR via direct burial CAT6 to the network switch, others to the NVR via the same. Several hundred feet of CAT6 were fished up through soffits to the attic then back down through walls to the crawl space, etc. It took some time and work, but in the end I have about 2,600 feet of CAT6 buried on my property to connect everything on my network. I don't regret a bit of it. This past weekend I replaced all of my cameras and upgraded from 4MP to 8MP and the difference was amazing. My recommendation it to spend the extra up front. You won't regret it. |
