A few weeks ago I bought a Savage DLX. It was 1st sale by that shop so I'm probably among the first US owners. Some thoughts on the base product: I'm not a fan of the medium lever loop, which allows some movement of the fingers before hitting the lever. I put a leather wrap on, but still beat up my knuckles when shooting higher volume. The angled mag tube only allows a very slim muzzle device; mine is 1.1 inches and sits 1 inch forward of the muzzle. Initially the mag tube cap was scraping but now it fits a bit looser. Takedown isn't really useful. If the bolt seats while taken down, it's a real pain in the neck to get it out so you can take the rifle up again. Myself & an armorer were unable to release it. I had to wait for the attention of a proper gunsmith (not helped by lack of reply by Savage via customer support phone & email). Overall, I think it's an excellent range toy / varmint gun for the price, just be careful taking it down. "Upgrades" I already mentioned a leather loop cover. There were some rough edges, especially on the bolt. I spent a little time de-burring them with a dry microfiber cloth. I experimented with neoprene on the hammer face and couldn't get it to stick with removable adhesive. I don't think it's worth pursuing a truly permanent method. |
