I know that there are a few of you who may be close enough, and may have an interest in shooting in an airgun match. My buddy and I are the match coordinator and match director respectively for this match. It is mostly for fun, and a way to get airgun shooter's feet wet in competition. It is also a warm up match for the Wasatch Airgun League's match in August. What we have planned is a Sage Brush Field Target course in which there are five lanes, each with four targets. Each target is to be shot twice. The distances will range from 25 to 105 yards. Any airgun with a power level of 20 ft-lbs to 100 ft-lbs of muzzle energy may be used. Shooting will be done from field positions, where a stool without a back, and shooting sticks may be used. Attached bipods, and rear bag supports are not allowed. The time limit for each lane is five minutes which includes the individual's set-up. In addition, we have four courses of fire on our main firing line. The first we are calling "The Great Idaho Train Robbery". This will have two Moving Train Engines that move across in opposite directions, a Strong Box with a Lock, and a Safe with a stick of "Dynamite" in front. At the start, the shooter is to hit one of the Train Engines while it is moving forward. Next, the Lock on the Strong Box needs to be hit, followed by the stick of "Dynamite", then back to the keyhole in the Lock. After that, the other Train Engine is to be shot twice before it stops and moves backward. The sequence is then repeated with the final shot on the first Train Engine. If the shooter misses, they must start back at the beginning of the sequence. The Second is the Alien Invasion from Outer Space. Here, there is a Death Star partially eclipsed by a hostage planet. Then, there are seven Space Ships including a TIE Fighter, and two Hostile Moons. One shot is to be taken at each target with the Death Star being the first. This is a hit or miss, move on type stage. The next two stages are similar to Airguns of Arizona's Speed Shoot. Twenty 1/5th scale targets with five of each critter on each bank. The first of these speed stages is the tie breaker where the faster shooter breaks the tie. Here the shooter starts the rifle unloaded, and two magazines with 20 rounds total on the bench. Any target that is not knocked down, is a miss. Here the targets are at extended ranges from AoA's format. The Chickens are at 30 yards, the Pigs at 45 yards, the Turkeys at 60 yards, and the Rams at 75 yards, The second speed stage has the critters at the AoA's distances of 25, 35, 45, and 55 yards, and follows more closely to those rules. Shooters start with rifles unloaded, magazines on the bench. A reload is mandatory, but the shooter is allowed as many rounds as needed to knock all the critters down. The fastest time is the winner. There will be basic prizes for the first through fourth place of the Sage Brush Field Target. Again, for the main range course (excluding the second speed stage). And, the true speed stage will also have first through fourth places. Then there are the Overall winners where the combined score of the Field Target, and Main Range stages (again excluding the second speed stage). Being that this was our first match, turnout was light. We had four shooters. I used my FX Dreamline in .25 shooting 25.4 grain pellets at about 815 ft/s. My local buddy shot his FX Crown in .25 as well. The out of town shooters shot FX Impacts. One was in .22, while the other was in .25 but shooting 33.9 grain pellets at 890 ft/s. However, if there was more variety of shooters (like we had at another match last weekend in Idaho Falls), there would be more variety of brands. Last weekend, among the 20 shooters, I saw a few Daystates (but not the Wolf line), a Leshy or two, and a few others which I don't recall the makes. Like our match, there were some problems with the borrowed targets where the lighter .25s and .22/.177s had issues with knocking some of the targets down despite well centered paddle hits. In the Idaho Falls match, I shot my FX Panthera tuned to shoot .25 caliber 33.9 grain pellets at 875 ft/s. Next year, I hope to join forces with the Idaho Falls airgun store (East Idaho Airguns) and hold a two day event at our Pocatello range, which I think is a better facility for such a match. However, setting up the Extreme Field Target course is a bit more work due to terrain. But, that terrain issue makes for a more interesting course of fire rather than a flat range. |
