I currently own a Sandman S, which I'm generally not a big fan of.  It was one of my first cans, and I chose durability thinking it would be a do-all can.  I learned quickly that it's not particularly good at anything other than surviving a nuclear blast.  Over the past few years, I've switched all of my bolt actions over to lighter cans and mounts, pretty much relegating the Sandman to AR duty.  It's not particularly good there either, especially since I'm left-handed.  It's just a rather outdated can.  Of course, I'm rather invested in Keymo mounts now.

I don't currently own one of the new crop of low backpressure cans and would like to try one out.  The use case would be any of my bigger than 5.56 AR's, which currently includes a 16" .308, and 8" .300BO, and an 18" 6.8 SPC.  All are RH uppers and will have adjustable gas.  I'm not a mag dumper, but I am looking for reduced gas and a can that's quieter at shooter's ear.  It will also be used on 5.56 AR's temporarily until I pony up for a LBP 5.56 can.

While I'm willing to bite the bullet and ditch Keymo, the Sandman X has caught my eye.  While I realize that Keymo is long and heavy, I haven't had any issues with it, and on my hosts, it doesn't matter as much for various reasons.  Sticking with Keymo would save me several hundred in new muzzle devices.  Basically, if I buy a Sandman X, I'll buy the Keymo version, but if I choose something else I'm not going to drop $250 on a Keymo adapter for it, I'll choose a different mounting system.

I haven't seen much feedback on the Sandman X online yet.  Does anyone have one and have any feedback?  How does the Sandman X compare to other current LBP options in terms of back-pressure and shooter's ear sound?  How does it compare to the Sandman S?

From everything I’ve seen it will blow the S out of the water, that’s for sure. It seems to be a decent performing can, might not be top tier but seems pretty solid.

I have the Sandman X using plan B mounts and it's a good all around can in my use with 5.56 and 300blk on shorter barrels.  Definitely not the best at anything, but pretty good.  FWIW I've compared it to a Tisha on one of my LMT 10.5" 5.56 guns with standard barrel, gas block, and BCG so "combat gassed" with no real tuning at all.  While the Tisha had an edge in backpressure (based on ejection) and sound (to my uncalibrated ear), it wasn't near the difference I expected and was just enough for me to notice.  For me the Sandman X is one I can throw on most anything I shoot and just not worry about it, even going crazy with FRT mag dumps.

I have one, it’s has a deeper and more pleasing tone than my polo, polo k, t3 or Alaskan. It’s certainly lower pack pressure than any of the above. My only real complaint is the finish doesn’t seem very durable. Buy one from notjustguns.com I picked up mine for under $800

I’m using one on a LMT 14.5 6.5CM and I’m happy with it.  I have a bunch of cans but this is my first 3d printed flow through.  I like it.

Mine is hub mounted direct thread.

I have one. I have an old S too. They’re completely different cans and I feel they did a bit of a disservice to the X in that a lot of people initially think it’s just a rehashed S. I did.

It’s a completely different design and basically a tweaked and bigger-bored Lazarus. They’re ok for sound, not amazing. They’re mostly useful for being a simple to use generalist .30 can that can’t really be broken. You plop it on any gun it fits, and shoot it however you want. No firing restrictions, no barrel length restrictions, etc.

Absolutely.

I melted some gun-case nylon onto mine, so I heated it with a propane torch and scrubbed it with a stiff-bristled gun cleaning brush. The burnt nylon came off...along with whatever finish DA uses.

Haven't had that happen with any of my other cans using the same procedure.

I emailed and sent a message through their website to ask what finish they used and what would be the best way to clean it in the future...never heard anything back. It's not that of a deal, doesn't really bother me...so I never followed up.

So, I would play devils advocate to the OP- he wants to keep his keymo mounts but feels locked into buying DA.

Good news OP, in todays hub mounting world, you van get a keymo hub adaptor and buy whatever can you want.

That being said, the damn keymo hub adaptor is like $200 so i hope you are *really* invested in keymo mounts.

The price of the keymo hub adapter is part of what makes me say that if I choose a different can, I'll choose another mounting system to go with it.  FWIW, I'm about 6 rifles deep in Keymo, so that's what is making me consider this can.  I have no aversion to Dead Air, despite the various issues which seem to have been resolved.  All that said, money is not my primary driver here.  I want to buy a LBP .308 can that will work well for a lefty shooting the hosts I previously mentioned.  If that's a Sandman X, so be it: I'll save some money on muzzle devices, if not, I'll go in a different direction.

Most are forum posts, but 2 seconds to find this: https://ottercreeklabs.com/warranty-policy/
This does not include utilizing the 1.375×24/HUB/universal mounting threads (with the exception of keymo) because this is not considered permanent modification and the suppressor is designed to be used this way. So if you get an end cap strike using a mount or muzzle device from another company, don’t worry because it’s still covered for free.

Its also big and heavy and expensive compared to Plan A or Plan B or a bunch of other options.

Several manufacturers have said that almost all their warranty issues stem from keymo, and at least a few won’t warranty a keymo’d can. I know OCL has said keymo is the common denominator in most of their problems, and many others have said/will say the same. Dead air themselves are the ones that created an alternate mounting solution with Xeno. That happened for a reason.

I started on keymo when it was one of the only games in town. I’ve also launched a Sandman downrange too, and don’t use it anymore. There are smaller, lighter, and less failure prone attachment methods these days and I swapped out actual dozens of keymo muzzle devices to get away from it, and have been very happy with that decision.

Some of the least knowledgeable posters here have tens of thousands of posts, and some of the most knowledgeable posters rarely post. A high post count is mostly a sign someone talks a lot, not that they have anything substantive to say.

Good article. When Keymo was first marketed its unique proposition was that it was a QD that could be used tucked inside a handguard (no locking collar requiring access).  This was mainly applicable to integral, welded native mounts.  A thread in hub mount came later which could be rockset in place. But as modular mounting became a useful feature rock setting one semi-permanent mount held less market appeal, compounded by scarcity of both Keymo mounts & muzzle devices.  Keymo was also marketed as foolproof. A simple twist to lock & unlock when the system is functioning as designed.  Eventually people figured out that tucked cans looked cooler than they functioned.  Heavy, long, wear-prone expensive mounting systems gave way to simple, more efficient taper mounts.

They make a lot of good points in that article, but this specific bullet point has me scratching my head:

When you include the complete KeyMo muzzle device, the weight penalty increases by an additional 8-18 ounces depending on the specific brake or flash hider configuration

What KeyMo muzzle devices weigh between 8-18 ounces?

The regular KeyMo flash hider is indeed heavy at 4.42 oz, and the NOX muzzle brake comes in at 4.5 oz, but I'm rather sceptical about there being any muzzle devices that are 8+ oz.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with keymo. It's almost always user error. I have many  suppressors from many different manufacturers all using keymo and never had a baffle strike even from those that claim that is the biggest cause. It being large and heavy is a better excuse not to use it.

No, they specifically claim that the muzzle device adds an additional 8-18 oz.

Even if we're talking about a hub adapter and muzzle device, I still can't see where they are getting 18 oz from.

I know the KeyMo system is heavy, but I don't think it's quite that heavy.

Fwiw, I'm not trying to defend the KeyMo system, I'm just sceptical about their claimed numbers.

Going back to the article posted earlier, I'm curious how this could have happened:

In one particularly alarming instance, a shooter experienced a catastrophic failure when their suppressor mount lugs sheared off during firing due to misalignment, sending their expensive suppressor downrange.

How does one even manage to get the lugs misaligned on a KeyMo mount?

That’s definitely not true. I’ve got two buddies who had issues with the HUB itself having parts out of spec. I think one of them wouldn’t even lock into place (Sandman K that took months to get fixed by DA).

Glad to see that my question about the Sandman X has turned into a purse swinging contest about whether or not Keymo sucks.  Since, as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't suck, other than the length/weight concerns, I'll discount all of that debate.  The only can I've launched downrange was not on Keymo, and the issue was resolved very quickly by the manufacturer in question.  The Sandman X also includes HUB threads, so should I, at some future time, decide that Keymo really does suck, I'll just change to a mounting solution that doesn't suck this week.  In other words, while I appreciate the Keymo debate, let's talk about the can itself.  Thank you for your attention to this matter.....

If I were to ever move away from KeyMo, this would probably be the direct I would go with.

I've looked at the Sandman X a bit, but considering my original Sandman suppressors have all of my hard use needs covered, I'm leaning more towards a Nomad LTi XC at the moment. I'd love to find one of the original Nomad LTi suppressors, but sadly I missed the boat on that one.

I haven't ruled out the Sandman X completely though, so will be watching this thread for any other firsthand reviews. My local gun store had one in stock last time I checked, so I may take a closer look at it the next time I'm there.

I also own an original Nomad LTi.  While I can't comment on the latest version, my LTi is my benchmark for suppression on a bolt gun.  It's just incredibly quiet without adding a lot of weight.  I'd hope the LTi XC is in the same ballpark.  I can't comment on gas guns, since I've never tried mine on one, but I can't imagine that you'd be disappointed on a bolt gun.

I’m happy with my X. I have a lot of cans. I wouldn’t use it for just anything, but I have lots of cans and lots of niches for optimal use cases. The X shines for a hard-use large-frame .30 can. On a SCAR, or 417 or MWS or the like.

My primary use will be on my Aero .308, though it certainly won't qualify as hard use.  Who knows, I may actually shoot my 8" .300 BO more if the X actually quiets it down.  The BO is the host that disappointed me the most with the S; I expected it to be way quieter with subs.

I bit the bullet and ordered the X yesterday.  Hopefully I'll be able to get it to the range soon.
