I’m planning to buy a clip on thermal COTI device for my PVS-31a. I saw TNVC is out of stock of the TAD unit and it looks like Safran just launched a new one called E-TAD (maybe that’s why they are out of stock) Anyone have any other info about this unit other than the launch press release from June that’s floating around? Are they worth it? |

The eTAD, from the info I have available at the moment, is aimed strictly at European military users. I'm not sure exactly what makes it distinct from the ECOTI2. There isn't a lot of info out there on ECOTI2, so for those who are not familiar, the TAD comes from the ECOTI2 program and is basically a "dumb" ECOTI2. TAD does not have any HUD/ATAK capability. Unfortunately, unlike the ECOTI, the ECOTI2 will not be available for commercial sales (GOV only). Based on the SDSI PR, the eTAD is also not available for commercial sales. ETA: The ECOTI is no more. Replaced by the ECOTI2. I'm assuming: ECOTI2 = USA eTAD = EU I'm awaiting more detailed info that I can share and I'll reply in here once I have it. In a nutshell, if you have a TAD on order or want to order a TAD, you don't need to hold out for the eTAD. - TNVC Will |

Seriously though, that tracks with what I expected after reading up. EU may well tailor the package to what they wanted, while US tailors the info and interface suite, and us civvies get the "dumb" TAD, which I am quite fine with, having owned eCOTI1 and owning a TAD currently. |

As expected, the "e" in eTAD stands for "European". It is a TAD that is HUD/AR integrated for European Nav-BM systems while remaining EAR/Non-ITAR compliant. As such, it is not not available for the US Commercial market, or useful to anyone not utilizing those systems. - TNVC Will |
