| For those of you who have built gun vaults, have you kept your safes and put them in the room? If your walls, ceilings and floor are reinforced concrete and you have a vault door it's not really necessary, I suppose. My guess is if they get inside your vault, a safe isn't going to be much of a deterrent. |
| I currently have four gun safes. I am building a new inground home in about four years. It will have a vault/safe room with concrete walls all the way around, a vault door, and a hidden shelf/door to get to the vault door and all of my guns will be out in the open in that. I will keep for sure one maybe two of my safes. One of them will be in my detached shop with a couple of guns and ammo (AR, 22, shotgun, couple of pistols). My house will have an attached garage and I may keep a safe in the garage with the same smattering as the shop. But I will probably only have one safe. |

OP. Excellent question. It really depends on the construction of the safe room a d the vault door. And of course the value of the items you wish to secure. If the vault is NOT well made reinforced concrete, or a pre made bank style vault sold by a company specializing in bank and payday loan vaults, then I think an added layer of security would not be a waste of money. If your vault room is a DIY not engineered job and you put anything less than a TL30 style safe in it, it really won’t slow anything or anyone down. Cheap safe rooms. With cheap vault doors with cheap RSC safes inside won’t really accomplish security. I highly recommend you look at World Wide Safes and Vaults out of Miami if you are considering building a truly secure vault for your valuables. They sell prefab ultra high density concrete slabs that interlock and are filled with fiberglass and all kinds of security features such as ceramic ball bearings and stainless steel chucks. All to prevent concrete blades from penetrating. They also sell true vault doors. Some rated for multiple person and tool attacks for 120 minutes or more. In that style vault, a safe located inside would probably be a waste of space and money. |

My company builds vaults as part of our business. The final product is generally the same almost every time: Steel reinforced concrete walls and ceiling with a legit vault door at the entrance followed by the best safe you can afford that also has concrete walls protecting the sides and rear, leaving only the door exposed. Add in an alarm system and you're pretty much maxed out on how secure you can make it. There is nothing that is impenetrable, but by doing the above, you weed out virtually everyone but the best, most capable thieves in the country...and even then you should like your chances. |
