I'm hoping to get some real world feedback from you guys with SR-15's and their ammo preferences.  Specifically ammo recomendation's for SR-15's with the 14.5" barrel. My plan is to buy some ammo in bulk of the results of this thread.  Let me know which ammo you've had great results with for this rifle.

Ammo depends on what you’re doing with it. Hunting, short range drills, long range accuracy.

Yup. And even then, not every barrel from the same mfg will shoot the same rounds with the same accuracy. You’re gonna have to buy some 20rd boxes and do some testing for optimal results.

The most precise round in my 11.5" SR-15 is 75gr T2 TAP

You should do your own testing.

I'd honestly buy a bunch of different types and weights and test them in your rifle.
In the long run it'll save money and frustration.

sounds like a plan. Thanks

A lot of it depends on your definition of “buying in bulk”.

I use this in my 14.5” Mod 2:  https://sgammo.com/product/223-556mm-ammo/200-round-can-5-56-x-45mm-64-grain-bonded-soft-point-federal-personal-defense-ammo-tcb556t64-packed-in-mini-ammo-canister/

It is well regarded as a defensive round and I have taken several smaller deer, sub 200 yards with similar rounds. A 200 lb. mammal is a 200 lb. mammal, whether it walks on 2 legs or 4.

At a buck a round, I don’t want to be using it as training ammo. I have a couple cases of it. For training, I bulk buy M855. POI is close enough for training at any reasonable range that the gun would be appropriate for.

My Mod 2 is set up with a NF ATACR 1-8X and a white light.

I'll pick some of this up for testing. Thanks for the heads up.

After shooting a fair amount of things living and not living, in 5.56 I've come to the conclusion that 70gr TSX got just a bit more than its fair share of magic. This probably owes to how it came to be, but regardless, it's my choice for "the one bullet that must do it all".

Current iteration has a 0.32X G1 BC, offers 150% expansion at 1800fps, and out of every stick I've put it through (Chrome lined, LW barrels, LPVO's), it shoots into sub 2moa nearly every time.

That said, the numbers don't describe well what it does when it hits living things. If you've shot living stuff with it and other types of ammo enough to observe, though, what you're seeing is high retained residual velocity through target. This is why off-side lungs look similar to the shooter-side, and why you get actual blood trails with 70 TSX.

This is a deer's lungs that I shot at 114.5 yards lasered with LE556T4 from an 11.5" SBR:

This is a deer's lungs hit at roughly 75m using 70gr TSX from an 11.5. Impact velocities were very similar.

This is the result of retained velocity through target. Like I said, the 70gr TSX just got...a lil' bit more Voodoo as us LA folks like to say. I really don't think there are any other bullets out there with as interesting a story as the 70gr TSX and how it came to be what it is.

What do you think of Hornady Black SBR 75gr - do have any experience with it?
https://www.hornady.com/ammunition/rifle/5.56-nato-75-gr-interlock-hd-sbr-black#

I like what I see above out of an 11.5. Because right now my SHTF is TAP T2 for 14.5 and longer and Black SBR for shorter than 14.5. And it honestly kinda sucks having to have 2 sets of mags / different ammo based on barrel length. And then there’s my 300BLK stuff and my 308 stuff.

Again, thanks for your time and post(s).

Im not really a hornady fan. I have no experience with that bullet, but their data indicates an abysmal BC, and its not bonded, so I am not likely to look into or evaluate it.

I just did a Google and they list it as only doing a hair over 2300 at the muzzle, and below 1400 at 300y. The browntip I use clocks 2550 10ft from muzzle, and is doing 1800fps by 300y.  No way Im interested in the hornady interlock given this data set.

They’ve built that load and projectile for these reasons:

“This round provides exceptional ammunition performance in SBR’s suppressed or unsuppressed, with virtually no flash or residue, dramatically reduced sound signature, will not foul or overheat suppressors, uniform velocity and accuracy, and provides controllable rate of fire in automatic platforms.”

Maybe they don’t need the velocity to accomplish the wound characteristics they’re after. In fact, that was the original pitch. Less recoil and flash, better behaviors suppressed, and the projectile is designed to expand and devastate at the lower velocity. It’s kind of apples and oranges comparing ballistics to a traditional 5.56 load. It’s lower velocity by design.

That said, it still means managing 2 different ammo types.

I think their sales pitch is extremely over-rated, as that's not an issue with any quality defensive ammunition that I'm aware of. Also, it's a lot to give up 400fps at 300 yards. Across the livingroom, 200fps. For what gain?
