FN just released there new Scar 17 16 and 20. With some updates. James Read has a video on YouTube. I like the updated bolt group that has an integrated buffer. To keep from killing your optics. Longer MLOK rail. So just hold off buying.

I will hold off to see if they bring much new to the table, beside marketing hype.  I have two 17's already.

The new 2 piece hydraulic BCG is backwards compatible so if it does what it says it does I’ll probably upgrade my RCH 20s vs buying a new rifle.

A have a 17 also, but the a new 6.5CM 17 in grey would be pretty cool

The video FN put out on social media has slow motion of the gun firing....the barrel whip is very noticeable.

I have a select-fire factory SCAR-17.  I don't understand the hype at all.
It has all sorts of reliability issues, accuracy sucks, the trigger sucks, the lower is plastic, and it's 6 different shades of light brown/yellowish/greenish color.  It looks like a parts gun.

Yeah...sample size is only one.

I was super excited to get the gun, but after owning and shooting it, I've been disappointed.  It appears to have an extractor problem, which I heard needs to go back to FN to be replaced.  I can't imagine having a gun that I can't just swap out the extractor.........Maybe that info was wrong.

Lol. What?

The trigger is not great/not terrible if you keep the select fire factory parts. Other than that, pretty unusual complaints

Yeah.  As someone who LOVES the SCAR this new one is disappointing in terms of looks.  Also kind of kicking myself in the ass now for selling mine thinking I wouldn't be able to get spare parts anymore.  Turns out the new one is backwards compatible with the old one.  Back to looks... unfortunately this thing seems to be going the way of the Bren 3 and Beretta NARP and trying to look like an MCX.

I saw some marketing material for it, and one of the selling points was a US Standard threaded barrel / muzzle profile. My first thought was... "So, now you're going to honor warranty if it's suppressed?"

Upside ... I'd swear they said something about a standard AR trigger group - - I'll have to check it out again tomorrow.

I've been on the fence with mine, now I think I'll keep and pay (probably a lot), to get the bolt and charging handle and upgrade mine. Are the barrels the same?

The barrel lockup looks the exact same on the new one as on the gen 1.  The 16 and 17 have the 3 screw trunnion, and the 20 has the 5 screw trunnion just like the old ones.  I guess it all depends on the gas block and if it clears the receiver.  My guess is it does, but on the 17 and 16 you now lose the front sight mounting on the gas block.

I noticed the same thing. I have never seen any SCAR do that before on prior clips.

These upgrades are things they should have brought out 10 years ago in all honesty. Everyone is so AR/HK 416 now, it will be hard to win contracts with the SCAR.

I’ve shot a few 17s and 20s with NF ATACR 4-16 and 168gr OTM and have found them to be very accurate and reliable. Friends who deployed with them only complained about the fragility of stock latch.

I was trying to get a NRCH bolt for my OG Belgian import 17s, a few months ago but they sold out from my distributors almost overnight night when they made the announcement. Now that the new bolt style is going to be available I’m looking forward to getting one. I’ll be asking the FN reps at Shot Show next week about availability.

I wish that it had the SR25  mag lower.  I get it, FN is making money selling mags.

I’m not in the market for one, as I have all 3 ( 16, 17 and 20) and plenty mags.

Same MSRP, even if MAP is $300 more that’s still a deal and covers the money you’d have to spend on a Geissele trigger for the legacy 17.

Midwest gun works has NRCH kits in stock.

Do they come with a Giessele now? I should of grabbed a blem Giessele a couple years ago when they were having a crazy deal just in case I got another scar one day because spending that extra $300 sucks but is almost required.

Do we know where the extra pound came from?  One of the best parts of the SCAR was its light weight.  What did we trade that for?

Full length receiver and bottom rail are the most obvious, sling QDs and maybe the more complex BCG and hydraulic buffer would be my guess.

EDIT: Word from SHOT is the BCG weighs the same but the barrel is a heavier profile rear of the gas block.

They are great rifles. But at about $1500-$2000 or so. FN guns are overpriced. My only complaint is the all the bolts holding together.

Then go buy a PSA Jakl, thats what $1500 gets you and it’s just as good.

Also, please tell me more about all the bolts not holding together. You are the only person I’ve ever seen this complaint from.

According to the FN rep at Shot Show the new bolts will definitely be available but probably not until first quarter of 27. He said priority was to get as many 17’s out on the market and fulfill existing orders.

The new SCAR is actually growing on me after not really liking the look at first. After seeing the prices of other comparable rifles coming out I think I might save up and grab a 16 if there's ever a daily deal sale on one in the next year or two.

I been wanting to build a grey rifle one day so it's a toss up between that and fde. I might even grab a 20 in 6.5 down the road if I ever decide to get into that caliber but as much money I waist on guns I don't need I could of already had the complete scar line up.

Agree, with XCR, Bren 2, ARX100, Makasi, MCX Gen 1s all out there cheap, the Scar pricibg is a bit detached from market realities.

Bren2 is nice, but falls short in availability of spare parts.

ARX100 is not a real contender. Poor availability. No parts or aftermarket support.

Makasi is not a serious use rifle.

MCX gen1? Why would one buy that at the moment? It’s been obsoleted by SiUgh ExeTurd in favor of 24 later iterations.

Maybe you missed the post a couple above yours where the rep at shot show said the new BCG wouldn’t be available until early 2027 because all of their production is going to existing orders.

FN is selling as many new SCARs as they can make. The OG SCARs are currently selling for above retail prices.

I think you guys are the ones detached from market really.

I picked up one earlier in the week and got it to the range today...I sold my early Belgian 17 for this one.

The trigger's better than the OG, but still not as nice as a Geissele - maybe it'll break in a bit but...probably getting a Geissele later on down the line.

Everything else though is as good as or better than the OG - except the sights. I liked the OG's sights better than the Magpul metal ones...but, at least you can replace the front on this one without leaving a nub on the barrel behind.

Recoil was mild at best, but I think the big brake helped a lot with that. The hydraulic buffer helped a bunch too.

My early Belgian didn't have the NRCH setup, so this was my first experience with it - I'm not super sold on it in that the extra little effort to unlock it is kind of annoying...but, whatever. With the provided foregrip your hand is out of the way of the charging handle anyway. The extra handguard length is awesome and worth the price of admission.

It came with a short stubby charging handle and a longer downward-swept one like the GG&G one - helps clear optic mounts on the left side...I put that one on and so far so good. The plastic nubs where the barrel screws go, well, they don't cover the screws totally, and they can catch and cut your skin when you yank the charging handle back and bang your hand into one

I've only got 140 rounds through it all told so far but I'm not regretting moving my old 17 for the new one. I'm waiting for my new flow-through can to get approved and show up, then I'll see how it does suppressed - now that FN's said they'll warranty things with low-pressure cans being used on them.

I don't get this at all.

From a pure function perspective, the gun needed a larger redesign than this. This literally just looks like they collected all the negative comments random people on gun forums have made over the years and turned it into a checklist. Rather than a holistic design.

From a collectability factor, the old design was prime for the recent GWOT nostalgia, which only seems to be building. New one doesn't hit that at all.

This just sits in some kind of weird middle ground. I predict poor sales.

I think the only additional changes it needed is the stock. Would be great if they had it use the new stock and lower receiver controls from the LICC-IWS.

I don’t understand the Ugg boot hate. Works perfectly fine for me and they solved the latch breaking issue yesrs ago.

At SHOT FN said they were releasing the buffer tube adapter end plate do people can use their AR stock of choice.

SCAR's are decent rifles.  When a manufacturer begins a series of "improvements" I always wonder how long I should wait before they work out all the bugs and settle on the final design.  I realize there will be small changes or improvements over time, just as with the AR-15 design, but too many changes in a short time makes me think I should wait until the design is more. "settled".

It's been 20 years since the SCAR came out. They just now made some updates. So many changes in a short time?

Are you still rocking the A1-style AR? because the SCAR was updated in more time than it took from when the A1 was typed to turn into the A2 (that took like 15 years, maybe less)...never mind the time between the A2 and the M4, then all the changes and SOPMOD packages for the M4...

I don’t hate it. I have an early Belgian SCAR16s and don’t mind the stock. It’s a bit chunky for what it is. The LICC-IWS stock looks better in that it’s lower profile, can fold left or right.

As for the AR stock adapters, gross.

I have both a 16 and a 17 and love them both. They have been super reliable.

I put 3,000 rounds in one 8 hour day through the 16 without so much as a belch, burp, or fart.

Having said that, I am wondering if the updated bolt group will work in my 17.  Inquiring minds want to know.
There are only two rules in life set in concrete. 1. Survival of the fittest. 2. There will always be the “haves” and the “have nots”.

Yes it’s backwards compatible and will be available for purchase at some point in the future.
