I have a SCAR 20 in .308 that I shoot suppressed. The gun always runs flawlessly. However, I've noticed that, not only is the ejected brass pretty dirty, so are the rounds left in the magazine after a few shots. Is this normal? Am I running over-gassed? I have not made any changes to the gas setting; it's as set at the factory. I recently heard that I'm supposed to change the gas setting for suppressed shooting. Is the gas setting what's making the brass so dirty? Will it improve if I change the gas setting? Now that I'm thinking about it, I have noticed more of a gunpowder smell when I fire it than I do with other rifles. The ammo is Gold Medal Match .308 Should I change the gas block setting? Will it change point of impact with the same ammo? |

Yes, when you shoot suppressed, the Can causes Back pressure or back feeding of smoke and unburnt power/carbon... Every round you shoot is like 10-15 even with factory ammo. Am I running over-gassed? I mean, its pretty much nature of the beast shooting suppressed. Will it improve if I change the gas setting? I'd suggest slowly shooting 5-10 rounds at each setting a few times, with Supers, then Subs, make note of how each does. Then try again, with more rapid fire shots and see how each does. Do this too learn your Hardware. Thats part of the fun is experimenting and learning your gear. Suppressed guns will ALMOST always have some kinda blow back, some factory ammos and some reloading powers are dirty than others. Should I change the gas block setting? Back to the try each one a few times and see how it runs. Will it change point of impact with the same ammo? I would say it's possible, but really should not. What you doing by changing the GB settings is adjusting that lil pinhole diameter from the barrel to the gas block to the gas tube. If its bigger its going to let more gas and powder back through it making the gun dirtier, but it should not really effect the POI, I don't think. |

Par for the course with a can. If you really want to get dirty, run a DI AR for a few mags. There will be gas escaping the rifle from places you never thought gas/carbon would come out. Piston guns are generally considerably cleaner. |

Even my new RC3 Surefire and my HUXWRX cans will still leave extra residue behind in the receiver, ammo and magazines. It’s just normal shooting suppressed. |

If you are going to shoot it suppressed most/all of the time it’s worth the $8 investment to get a smaller gas control screw. If you are going to go back and forth a lot or shoot a bunch of different pressure ammo get one of those adjustable gas plugs like the disSCARder or SCARburator. It’s not going to run any cleaner but it will shoot softer. |
