I just picked up a second SCAR 17 for a good deal, and it came with two barrels. One is a 13 in with a long BE Meyers flash hider welded to make it 16". With this long flash hider, it is only ~2 inches shorter than the full size barrel. It also rings like heck. I am considering SBR'ing one of the SCARs, and running a shorter flash hider on the 13 barrel to get the compactness. Three questions for the hive who may have gone down this path already: - Is it worth SBR'ing a SCAR 17? - Do I SBR the Belgium made RCH or the US made NRCH? Both are in great condition. The RCH one has the GG&G mechanism to make it function as a NRCH. - Should I cut down one of the 16in barrels to go even shorter than 13"? Thanks in advance. |

I love mine. Has no issues going out to 650-700 - after that it starts to peter out or get bucked by the wind but if you’re shooting that far with a 13in 308, you’re doing it wrong to begin with. I think it’s a great do it all battle rifle and it looks way cleaner with the 13in barrel than the 16. If I want a long SCAR I’ll use the SCAR 20. Attached File Attached File |

If for some reason I could only bring 1 rifle with me, my 13" SCAR 17S SBR is the one I'd bring. It's an incredible amount of power in a light, compact, reliable, accurate, and handy package. I shoot it out to 700 yards frequently and it has excellent accuracy with 155, 168, and 175 grain rounds. I've lost count of how many wild hogs I've dropped with it. The wound channels on a hog from a 16" 5.56 aren't even in the same ballpark as what a 13" barreled .308 will do. The biggest downside is that the concussion is severe, so plan on needing a can. Second biggest downside is that the can will get smoking hot with much fewer rounds than a 16" 5.56. But overall it's probably the best "do pretty much everything" single rifle you could choose. As a bonus it makes impressive fireballs without a can.

| Thanks - a lot of great input in this thread. I think I am going to SBR to NRCH one, since it is US made and I would not feel bad engraving it. Now to decide on the can to use. I have several 30 call cans, going back to an AAC 762SDN6. I need to check the barrel length restrictions. |

I think some of the CAT cans are better, but probably more expensive. I have an OCL Infinity I've tried on mine which is definitely gassier than the Hux. According to Pew Science, its about 50% more gas with the vented end cap. You should look into a Gen 4 Scarburator too. They're like $150. |

The M16 has thousands of rounds of essentially only full auto 30 and 60 round mags dumps and it has held up just fine. Huxwrx makes a great suppressor, I wouldn't hesitate to throw one on a SCAR. 308 actually does really good with a short barrel. I use my Garmin and chronograph several loads with the factory fn 16 inch barrel and the factory 13 inch fn Scar barrel. The 20” values from an AR10ish gas gun. NAS3 with nosler 150g ballistic tips 16” 2750 fps 13” 2605 fps AAC 150g 20” 2728 fps 16” 2620 fps 13” 2509 fps Federal American Eagle MSR 149G 20” 2768 16” 2647 13” 2549 AAC 175g 20” 2578 fps 16” 2490 fps 13” 2401 fps Barnes 150g ttsx 20” 2801 fps 16” 2721 fps 13” 2669 fps AAC Sabre 150g black tip 20” 2758 fps 16” 2648 fps 13” 2546 fps As seen here, you only lose roughly 200 fps going from a 20 inch all the way down to a 13. Only lose about 100 FPS going from a 16 down to a 13. |
