I recently purchased a Ruger American chambered in 308. After taking it out to the range I was gifted some wisdom to making the factory trigger have a featherweight pull to it. Wisdom was to replace the Trigger Return Spring with that of a similar width and length (or cut it down to size) from a spring loaded pen. I ended up buying a few different sized spring loaded pens and swapped out a near perfect replacement. And I gotta tell y’all the results are amazing. I kept the Allen screw tightened down and I was seeing a perceived pull weight of around a pound to pound and a half. After loosening it up a bit it seems like the trigger pull is featherweight. Sent around 50 rounds through without issue yet. Anybody else have similar experiences or thoughts? |
| I have replaced the trigger spring in all of my Ruger Americans with excellent results. Except for one when I was fitting the replacement spring and let it fly off somewhere. I remembered hearing about some shooters that removed the spring all together. I tried it without the trigger return spring and it works perfectly well, the safety blade spring is enough to reset the trigger on its own. I'm measuring a little over a pound on that one. |

This trigger return spring change will work on all Ruger American's, including the rimfire models. I've found adding shims to the trigger will improve the trigger even further. Testing with a trigger pull gauge I've gotten trigger pull weights down to 18 ounces easily. So I installed the spring and washers that DarkStar linked. It was under $10 and was a quick 7 minute install. Dropped my trigger pull from a suprisingly heavy-feeling 3.4lbs with the trigger adjustment screw backed out 4 visible threads to a very nice and crisp 1.75lb pull with the adj screw only backed out one visible thread. I'm thrilled...you used to have to pay big bucks for this kind of improvement by a gunsmith. Well worth it and even better if you can get the same result with a ball point pen spring! |
