Howdy! I've been shooting 2gun and recently got into PCSL that uses a lot of shorter bay stages. My 18in gun with LVPO just isn't the right tool for blasting inside 50 yards. I have my first gen CQB that has more or less been a nostalgia safe queen and still sits as I used it ~2012 during my LARP/carbine course phase. It has about 4500 rounds through it, so it should have plenty of life left. I'd like to reconfigure it and put it back to use. Attached File I think I'd like to make the following changes: - lightweight mlock handguard - adjustable gas - ditch the suppressor/mount for a linear comp or brake - low mass operating system?? Questions for the KAC experts before I start digging into it: -will a low mass carrier (jp) work with the KAC E3 bolt? -can I use a geissele reaction rod in the KAC barrel extension? -do I really need a tool to remove the KAC barrel nut? (I'm fine with damaging it, and won't be putting it back on there) |

Build what you want to use but please do not change that work of art. Or if you’re set on using it just slap an LPVO on it and go! |

Was very close to reporting this as a troll post, but in any case, don't touch that gun it is worth a ton of cash. Build out a new upper or, better yet, complete gun with what you are looking for in a 2 gun rifle. Don't you dare part out that upper/gun, it is worth thousands now. Current production stuff is getting cheaper every day and on the EE it is even cheaper. My other advice is don't bother messing with low mass carrier stuff unless you go with a longer barrel setup of some kind. With standard carrier setups in shorter barrels I have been very happy with Gisselle's Super 42s. |
Looking at gunbroker prices, people have lost their damn minds  I *think* this was called a SR-15 CQB Mod 0? It was the first CQB run with Vero Beach lowers. I've never really considered selling it and probably wouldn't. It was my first NFA item and has fun memories attached to it (shooting classes with father/friends). Its definitely been used, and I don't have all the original stuff that it came with. If I mod it, I'd shoot the snot out of it and then return it to the current config as a wall hanger. It will add some cost, but I suppose I could build a short upper on JP guts and use this lower. I have like half the parts on hand. I'm mostly trying to avoid the cost/hassle of adding another SBR lower. |

For the love of god, leave that upper alone. It is not a great upper by modern standards. It's not ergonomic, the folding front sight is mediocre on a good day, but those are unique and rare. Just buy a complete upper and slap it on there - it'll be less work and won't ruin a good factory upper. |

As much as it irks me to spend more money when I have a gun in the safe that is collecting dust, I may just build a modern 11.5" upper and SBR my gamer gun lower so I can swap the 18" out at short range matches. I have no desire to sell it, or split the upper from the lower. Lots of fun times in the 2010's with that thing. It's kind of an obsolete time capsule in its current config  I'm still curious if the geissele reaction rod is compatible with the KAC barrel extension. |

Its not, you need a Knight Stick or the Nefarious Arms rod (which also works for standard AR15s or HK416s) |

Also for what it is worth, there are not a lot of handgaurds that are lighter than that URX that also still maintain the strength of it. That rifle with an MCQ, would be a lot of fun in the short stages. |

Just fyi I’ve used a reaction rod with both sr15s and sr25s. No issues at all. No play at all. Works the exact same as a knight stick imo. I of course concur that it would be a huge mistake to do anything but cherish that upper. It’s a work of art from some of the best years the AR15 has ever seen. A 2.1 CQB upper or ks3 if you can get one would be ideal. Gieselle is the wack. Buy once cry once as they say. My mod 2 CQB upper from 2016 is my fav of all time, and I have all 3 CQB iterations. The new ones seemed to be more gassy. If you can find a used one from the mid 20teens I’d hop on it. |

Like another poster said, don't change that other than a LPVO It's the 11.5" with an AAC M4-2000 on a 51t brake mount. The LVPO is the opposite of what I want for short range matches I want to Ricky Bobby a red dot.  Really I want a lighter/shorter setup with a red dot and mlok rail similar to what I'm used to on my current match setup. Yanking this out of the safe seemed like it was getting close to what I'm looking for. The gun itself is great for what it is (an outdated, but reliable combat oriented setup). Its heavier and less ergonomic than I'd like for a modern gamer gun setup. I shot a match with it last fall and did just fine. I just felt like I was fighting the support hand position since I have put a lot of practice into body mechanics with a longer/thinner mlok handguard. |

I suppose you run the risk of a lot of things when playing with guns though. I’ve beat the absolute shit out of much of my Kac collection, and they all keep on trucking along. If anything that reaction rod gives the chamber a little scrubbing. Only scrubbing they’ve ever gotten 😂 |
