I got a Springfield M1-A around 30 years ago, a pre-ban standard model that came in a crinkle-finish black fiberglass stock. I soon replaced that with a USGI walnut stock and USGI handguard, and made a custom filler piece for the selector cutout. Anyway, several years ago I stripped the finish off of the fiberglass stock, and found that it was a USGI fiberglass model that had been modified by an epoxy-type filler in the selector cutout. I had read somewhere in the past that these stocks can be painted with a camo brown that approximates the original USGI color. Can anyone confirm this? I saw some Rustoleum texture-finish brown paint this weekend that looked interesting. Thank for looking. |
Aervo is what I’ve used in the past for “camo”, and I believe that’s what the military uses. Don’t know what color would approximate the original stock color. I also have an “original” black crinkle paint fiberglass stock, as well as an original USGI stock. Personally, I prefer the USGI wood stock on my Standard. My Loadeds have Boyd’s stocks on them.

That was done for one or two reasons,…..they were cheap and available surplus at that time or two the elevation serrations on the receiver weren’t sharp enough to hold fast during recoil. If the former I’d put a genuine M14 sight on it and move the lock bar to a WW2 era garand. |
The only hyphenated names I like are cartridge names......30-06, 30-40, 38-55 etc.
