Remove odor from safe

I recently picked up a used safe that was previously utilized for document and coin storage - its great other than a strange odor on the inside. Not bad - just annoying.
I have tried leaving it open for several days with ceiling fan on to air it out, I even threw a few dryer sheets inside it. No change.

Any suggestions on how to remove the odor without using anything that will hurt the interior or the firearms that will soon be going inside it?

I bought a used safe 10 years ago that absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke. It was really bad. I used Fabreeze Fabric Heavy Duty Odor Eliminator. It took 2 applications, but it did the job, and the smell never came back.

This is your best bet. If you have fabric on the inside you could also try a steam cleaner if you have access to one.
