I've always been a fan of the RAL 8000 color. Even though there's some questions on the exact shade, the idea of a yellow/brown/green mix to me is an aesthetic win. Here's a sample of RAL 8000 from HK showing a sample of the various shades that can be called RAL 8000: While there are some manufacturers making furniture in that shade and Cerakote and Rapco make a spray paint, I wanted to see if I could transform existing polymer furniture in the more common FDE shade using common Rit dye. So, to start I needed to determine a dye recipe. Rit has a special synthetic material dye blend that would be best for polymer. My initial selection is the Daffodil Yellow for the base shade. To bring in the green/brown tone, I chose Smoky Blue. My assumption would be the somewhat greyish blue would keep the color on the earthier side.  For my initial testing, I wanted a quick and consistent polymer swatch to test dye mixes. I happened to have a Bone color PLA+ filament ready and 3d printed some test squares using a calibration test pattern. Using these I could start testing ratios until I found the right mix. Here is the results of my first batch of tests:  Starting at the top is the control. Next is straight Daffodil Yellow. Then the ratios are as follows (Yellow to Blue): 12-1 8-1 4-1 I think my favorite is either the 8-1 or 12-1. I think I'll test those next on a larger piece, maybe an actual grip. Anyways, hope this might be a helpful reference for someone attempting to dye items in the future. I'll update the thread as I do more tests. |
