Does anyone know when the original SR-15 M4/Match rifles really came out? Like what year were they introduced to the market, and were they ever advertised in magazines and stuff?

| Second half of the 1990's. Ban Era, so they had that hider pressed over the barrel. Second pic is interesting, first I've seen one with the fake hider removed. Fugly. |

I had an SR-15 M4 for awhile - I think I paid roughly $1200 for it, brand new with tax and dealer's special order / transfer fees. That was around 1997-1998 if I remember correctly. The lower receiver was LMT marked / serialized on the grip tang, but laser engraved Knight's Mfg. Co, etc. on the usual spots on the magazine well under ATF variance. The barrel was a Wilson made, non chrome-lined with the pressed-on flash hider. It shot fine, nothing great, but was a factory-built AR kitted with good parts (the trigger in mine was excellent) that made it a pretty good value at the time compared to buying a Bushmaster or Olympic and trying to accessorize it similarly. (I left out Colt because, at that time, anything commercially available was hard to source and relatively expensive for me - plus you had to navigate all the non-standard pins and sear block BS.) I sold it to a friend, but kinda wish I still had it. I'll add that in the images posted by OP - none of the SR-15s of the time came with a removable carry handle, and they pre-dated the KAC trigger guard installed on that Match rifle by over a decade. I bought the bottom rifle in your pictures, an SR-15 Match new in 2003 for $1500. I sent it to Gemtech, had them cut and thread the barrel to 18" and installed a bi-lock flash hider. I shot the upper and my M4-96D suppressor with a pre-ban Bushmaster lower until the ban sunset the following year. I still have that rifle. The triggerguard in that picture isn't period correct since the rifle just came with a standard triggerguard. |
