I have done a few cold blue repairs and refinishing, but never hot blueing. I know the chemical process but have a question. Are barrels plugged prior to putting in a hot tank? Just thinking of the rifling being exposed to the rusting process.

No, it is blued too.
As hot as it is, there is not much you could plug the barrel with that will either hold up to the heat, or not leak.
If you look at any new gun straight from the manufacturer that has a blued finish, the bore is blued too.
It does no harm.
