~sorry for a few upside down pix - doing this from my mobile~ I purchased a VERSA-11 for my M-11/9 and then went to mount my SilencerCo ASR Suppressor Mount / Muzzle Brake….well, slight problem, the forward hole on the G17 Mag Module was too small, what to do? Dremel? I’m a butcher with the dremel, so, for me, no. Richard Lage, of Lage Manufacturing, offered a prototype for me to test that solves this problem - or does it? Full disclosure: Richard sent the prototype to me to test for no cost, he asked that I provide feedback, the goal being a better / permanent solution for these larger suppressor mounts - I have an Omega 36M that I have planned for this platform and it’s currently using ASR mounts that I have on a few other so I do like the ease of use / swapability. Sure, I could’ve tried different mounts, etc. but I really do like the ASR style of mount. OK, enough rambling, let’s get to the prototype!! Prototype received, looks like a production item, just like the original - other than a redesign at the business / barrel end to provide adequate clearance and the required meat / material on the module to withstand abuse / use along with plenty of air gap radially and axially between the adapter and rear of the suppressor. Inside diameter of the front cover of the mag module is 1.3"   Comparison with the original (LEFT) versus the prototype (RIGHT):  And then vice-versa...  So, is there enough clearance? Let’s mount it up and see - YES!! The module slides easily over the ASR mount and there appears to be plenty of air gap - one concern is heat during sustained full auto mag dumps - how will the prototype mag module hold up to the heat, is it too close? Is it heat resistant enough? Questions that I sought to find out. Stay tuned…. Mounted up - PLENTY of ROOM!! My apologies for not getting the camera lens perfectly centered - this shot does not do it justice, suffice it to say that it has a nice, concentric gap ALL the way around.      Mounted up and READY to go!!

A closeup of the mounted suppressor (SilencerCo Omega 36M with an ASR Muzzle Brake):   The "let's go to the range" setup!  Test Methodology: Run the first mag at burst / almost full mag dump speed then check with my bare fingers as the testing instruments - yes, I know, high-tech measurements / instruments here, I put my meat hooks on the line (fire HOT, learned that lesson as a kid, right?)…the mag module was just barely warm after the first mag - the suppressor really hadn’t started to smoke, yet!! 2nd mag with more sustained burst, then the 3rd with a full dump - the suppressor is giving smoke signals, nice and HOT!! I checked the mag module - it’s nice and warm but NOT hot - I’m checking for any softness / deformation due to heat, none felt, visual check appears good too!! I swear that I saw smoke when I took this pic...it may not show up hear, but suffice it to say...it was warm...  Let’s keep the heat going!! I ended up with a total of 11 mags (~330 rounds total) - the last few with full dumps - my suppressor was ready to sear some steaks!! The mag module was warm but it never got hot - I was able to fully handle all parts of the mag module with my bare hands and I never felt any softness / deformation. Visual check passed as well - the test was a resounding SUCCESS!! My verdict: the Lage Prototype passed the test, PROBLEM SOLVED - THANK YOU, Richard!! Targets (btw - the guy to my right was using a semi-auto rifle...glad they have walls between us LOL! - not that I'm the best shot, for sure):   Mags (empty) after testing...  Post-testing pics of the prototype mag module (before cleaning), all looks as good as new!!!   |
