I’m going to get a .308 G3 style rifle. My question is which one? CA-3 is offered with the A3 stock but no apparent way to mount an optic, price is around 1k . I have someone who can tig weld a rail. PTR-91 easy optic mounting and more refined more pricey. Any experience with both/either platform? I’ve had a load of fun with my MAC5k and C93 so I want to round out the collection with the big brother. |

You can get a claw mount for optics, no need to weld. Claw mount search I can't help on the rifle itself. |

The CA-3 is built with rougher surplus parts kits, so it'll have more of a worn look to it. Local shop has a PTR-91 with a MI rail and 11 mags for $1550. I think that’s a little high, so I offered $1200 and now I wait. Friend at the shop said I was the only person who had asked about the rifle since it’s been there. I’ve seen the CA-3 for under 1k so with shipping and transfer $1100 plus $150 for mount. I feel lucky. |

Haven’t heard back on the PTR. So I’m going to build one. Built dozens of ARs, couple AKs, FALs, 1911s but never a HK platform. Why not? Because it’s the most challenging platform for a home builder and parts are expensive. So HK Parts has used G3 barrels for $90. They also had flats and I needed some spare parts. Decided to roll the dice on the barrel, a new one is between $190 and $275. I’ve been happy with what I’ve received from them before. Flat arrived as expected. Barrel was dirty but one pass with a patch and it’s really nice, bright and shiny. Very happy. So… FMP parts kit $135 (already had it) Used barrel $90 Flat with weld kit $175 So far $400 in parts. Got a friend who has done several so I’m looking forward to a fun project. |

I am weak, I was unable to wait until I had the time to build a rifle. I scored a mint PTR-91 for $900 OTD. The trigger pull is around 5 lb. Added a Burris AR332. Quick range trip had me ringing steel at 200 with a big grin on my face in spite of the fact that the State of Florida is hotter than the devil’s taint in the middle of July.Attached File I will be spending a lot more time with this one and it gives me inspiration to complete my build. |

Attached File The rifle came with an extended m-lock rail that I didn’t care for, so I cut the front end off and painted it OD. Found an old grip pod and added that. While cleaning it I discovered that it also has a Timney trigger, so my weekend has been getting better and better. I might switch back to the regular slim od handguard but with the addition of a rail section on the bottom. I’ll weigh both and pick the lighter one. So far so great, this is one of my grail guns that I’ve been wanting since I first saw one in a book when I was a kid. |
