Loading up some 68gr Xtreme Defender 9mm and I have found load data for Tite Group going from 4.7g to 5.5g. 4.7g would not even cycle my M&P Shield X. (There also is load data for CFE Pistol @ 6.2-7.1 ***6.2g would not cycle the slide, fte/ftf every time. But 6.5g ran flawlessly***) So clearly the light loads do not work in the Shield. But initially I was mainly concerned with cycling. The 6.5g running good gave me confidence I could proceed with more loading. Anyways I would like to get up to +P territory but I cannot find any load data for it. 5.5g of Tite Group has a pressure of 33,700 and +P top end is 38,500 from what I've read. The Shield X is rated for +P ammo but I cannot find any data to support loading for it. Is there any way to go forward loading for this?

For the 68gr "xtreme defender", that's a funny name, it lists a oal of 1.105 in a jagemann brass case. Titegroup start load is 5.1gr and a max load of 5.5gr Cfe pistol has a start load of 6.9gr, with a max charge of 7.4gr. Where did you get the load data? Seems like your substituting a different bullet. Do you have a chronograph? That bullet is extremely light for caliber and would need to run 1700fps to have the same power factor as a 115gr running at 1000fps. It's like running a styrofoam bullet in a short recoil operated pistol. |

Where did you get those pressure specs from? Lehigh says 5.1 gr (1420 fps) to 5.5 gr (1525 fps) of Titegroup. <-- 4" barreled 9mm Luger. How long is the barrel? What is your OAL? Lehigh says 1.105" Here are some GRT results but there are several guesses in this run. Note, GRT predicts 1525 fps from a 4" barrel, just like the Lehigh data.

I loaded up a bunch of 65gr arx bullets at 6.1gr of autocomp, and it cycled in my guns, but those are kind of long bullets because they are a copper polymer blend. Due to length, I set them pretty deep in the case, so with a shorter bullet, with less seating depth, I believe you could go much higher. It's a light recoiling load, and gets about 1600fps from a shadow 2. Autocomp seemed like a good choice because it's a slow burning (for 9mm) powder, and you can use a bunch of it and pressures stay reasonable. At the same time, it was very blasty from shorter barrels. I bought some norma nxd rounds that go over 1900 fps, but they have special casings to support higher pressure, and I had a case split in 20 rounds fired. I hope this gives you an idea of what min and max velocity might look like with these light bullets. You need a pretty hefty powder charge and high velocity (for 9mm) to cycle most pistols. Also, keep in mind that the thread of loading over 2k fps was done by someone familiar with 9 major, and using a CZ p10, which has probably the strongest chamber for 9mm on the market. Comparing to a glock, it's stunning how much steel CZ used. |
