Wanting to upgrade the old Marlin 1895 into a more proper hunting rifle. Thinking a 1x4, or even a 2x7, might be a good fit. Anyone know what scopes I should look at that work well with that caliber, can handle the recoil, or a rail that works well with an 1895? Every lever-action I own has only had irons. |

I use a fixed 2x, but it’s an elk gun. I also needed the scope farther forward than a regular rail, so I fabbed this up. Now there are all sorts of extended rails, none when I bought. Even this low, I have a 1/2” of rise on my stock. Keep it low. I might be getting a 1x4 or something similar, and a new rail. Attached File |

I put a Leupold VX2 1.5-4 power scout scope on mine. Most of my elk hunting is in heavily wooded brush so that power is fine for me. I mounted the scope with leupold QD rings, so I always have the option of using the irons. Attached File |

| I really wish Leupold would do another run of the 2.5x20 scopes. I have one with the Ashley mount on one of mine. Fabulous combination. Ideal when you need that in between irons/peep sights and 2-7. Much smaller and lighter than even the 1-4s. They are such a nice choice for a variety of rifles. |

I have an H&R 1871 Buffalo Classic in 45-70. This single shot has a Williams receiver sight and Lyman Globe front sight. I wanted a QD RTZ (return to zero) low power variable for when hunting rather than target shooting. Mounting was a challenge because of the receiver rear sight, which I use 90% of the time. So, I had to mount a long eye relief scout scope. Regardless, if you can mount a conventional or scout scope the difference will be eye relief. I chose a Burris 2-7x with traditional duplex cross hair reticle, but it is illuminated. Of course it is a scout scope variant, actually a pistol scope to get the eye relief I needed, but the conventional eye relief version is about the same scope otherwise. Clear image, built rugged. Has served well under heavy revoil. This is a very strong action rated for Buffalo Bore 45-70 "Magnum" loads - 405gr. hard cast lead at 2000 fps - actually 2100 fps from the long 32" barrel. Recoil is - stout! The rings and bases are the Talley four bolt steel vertical rings with indexible throw levers. This is a very strong, secure lock up system with excellent return to zero. The ring halves are machined at the base as a single milling operation with each matching half numbered.

My buddy and I both added a Trijicon Accupoint 1-4 with the BAC Triangle. It works really well as a quick acquisition optic. However, I need to add a cheek riser for mine. Still trying to decide the optimal zero: 50 or 100 yard. Once I can get out to the range and just work on this gun, I’ll post what I figured out. Please bear in mind, we live in Alabama and were wanting this to be a gun to walk around through the woods hunting deer. That optic can be found pretty cheap on here. The Accupoint also comes in 1-6 if you want more magnification. |

I tried the cheap neoprene stock sleeve, with padding underneath to get me about 3/4”. Figured I would buy a nice leather one once I knew 3/4” was right. Like the neoprene thing so I didn’t go leather. It does soften the blow. I do have tape holding the pads cause they were slipping under there. Attached File |
