 Right now, I have an 11.75 with a primary arms slx 1x, and I’m not sure about it. I love the sight itself, but I don't know about it on an sbr. I'm contemplating selling it, throwing some money on top, and getting an aems, an aro evo, or something like that. Or would that be a mistake, and I should just get used to it? The rifle is intended for close quarters, but able to reach out to longer short distances if needed. |

I would consider a Primary Arms flip to side magnifier.... 3x And while the AR15 in 5.56 doesn't have much recoil.... consider this recoil pad. Its a tough question. Optic that is good close and far is what everyone wants. You need to think honestly about how far you need to be able to engage and what sized targets in what environment. I am no expert at all. But I regularly shoot my 14.5 with a TA11 out to about 600 at steel. Even with the TA11 I personally struggle some at that distance. depending on the steel color, size and back drop I struggle to see hits and misses. The other day I put a T2 on the same rifle and really struggled with it even at 340 yards. Its wasnt a matter of the dot covering targets or holds or any of that. It was seeing the steel, seeing the hit and seeing the miss. A nice big black steel was fine to see at 340. I could usually hear hits just fine on that one. But 40 yards to the left was a big orange diamond but the paint was worn and it had a brown bush behind it. Clear as day in my ACOG or binos. But at 1x I just saw a brown bush. I tried putting rounds on the left side of the bush but could not hear or see the hits. Another example was a large yellow diamond at about 350 yards. The center paint was blasted away so it was yellow with gray center. You would think yellow would stand out. But in bright sun tan scrubby grass and sage brush it was just invisible without magnification to my eyes. again clear as day with binos. Another example, The 200 yard berm was cover with old faded clays that were more white/gray than day glow orange. !x they completely blended into the rocky gray and tan berm. With some magnification 5 shots and 5 clays popped. I admit my eyes are not young any more. But it was very eye opening to try out a 1x at more than 100 yards. What was surprising was WHAT gave me difficulty. The aiming points and holds are not nearly the problem as target ID and spotting misses. At least for me. The color, shape and contrast of the target play a huge factor. My range has steel (i think) to 2600 yards. It is amazing how few you see with the naked eye even out at say 400-500 if in the trees. Then use some binos or a scope and you start seeing them all over the place. I think we really underestimate the value of magnification (just some, not a lot) at distances. All that being said, I am in the same boat as the OP and looking for the right optic for my LMT SBR. I will probably stick with the T2 and just recognize that out past 100 yards it will be less and less effective as the targets gets smaller or contrast low. EDIT: just realized I should probably been wearing my glasses with the T2, maybe I could have seen the targets better.  Kind of pitiful that I am not joking. My vision has gotten worse over the years but with all my optics from binos to scopes to even ACOGs I see great. So it didnt occur to me to wear them with the T2.

But i dont think a reticle with hold overs will be useful in a 1x. The problem with a 1x optic at long range isnt just the the hold overs. So i just dont know how useful the more complex retucles are on a 1x. I had my T2 out to about 500 yards a few days ago. I struggled at even 350 yards. It was hard to see even good size pieces of steel unless they were high contrast black or white. It was also very hard to see misses. It was also hard to see hits. Sometimes i could hear the hits but some steels dont "ring" the same as others. Stand by, switching computers mid response  I have an ARO with the SPR reticle on my 10.5 and I like it well enough. I have an 11.5 with a Vortex 5x prism with a piggy back red dot that I think I prefer though. Either way is a decent option. You'll have to figure out your holds with that BDC though because it certainly isn't set up for an SBR. |

But I think clarity, eye box and other things would determine how well it works in reality. |

TA33 I’ve had one on my 11.5” Noveske build for years. BAC works. Both eyes open. No problem hitting danger close to 300 yards. Get rid of the Trijicon boat anchor mount. The LaRue mount is great. Practice with it and you’ll love it. |
