I've seen pics of peoples benches scattered throughout the reloading forum, but I thought it would be nice to have a single thread where you could post pics of your little patch of reloading heaven.

This is room #2 in the condo, man if they knew what I had in here. The bench is kiln dried doug fir based on a pattern I got out of the American Rifleman aboutt 20 years ago. It's drilled and held together with 1" Schd 80 pvc nipples/washers and locknuts. 1-1/8' thick very hi density fiberboard. Rock solid and can be broken down and moved. The rack from Costco hold the 5000 pcs of 223 brass, about 18M bullets and various other ammo shit. Tools are kept in a Craftsman roll away out of the pic. I used to have 10 times the amount of stuff till I downsized about 5 years ago but it keeps growing. The safe holds 6 ARs', Benelli M2, custom 7mm/08, 45-70 and a bucha hand guns. I be set. | I saw a picture of your press setup. Are those the Lee Classic Turret and Single Stage? Can you please answer some of my question in this forum - http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=42&t=261829 - that deal with the Lee presses? I'd greatly appreciate insight from a Lee user. |

sweet thread. I am going to start reloading in Jan due to my .458s purchase. I came here to start a thread asking about what material would be best for the top of a bench.
So.....what material do you suggest for the top of the reloading bench? I have a bench and plan to purchase some wood this weekend and redo the top. Please give me your suggestions. Gracias! |

My first set-up - it has since changed a little.
I have the powder measure mounted to it, now, and certainly gave up on the Lee lube. I use the tumbler outside, and the scale sits on the board right behind the press. If I hadn't dropped my camera and ruined it I would take a current picture of it all. |

The Rockchucker has been replaced with a 550, but... An old piece of kitchen counter top on the cheapest under counter cabinets at the home store. Added a sheet of 3/4 inch plywood with a tube of construction adhesive for extra stiffening. Easy clean surface, lots of storage and solid as a rock. The SDB and Rockchucker are mounted off to the right to leave a large area for gun cleaning and miscellaneous tasks. The vise with soft jaws is used a lot more than you'd think on a reloading bench. The typing table holds my brass low to my right hand when using the SDB, just the way I like it.  When not in use, the typing table stores in the knee hole of the bench.

The pics below are my old setup. I no longer have a basement and need to build a new bench. I have a question for those who use one bench for everything, including mounting the press, storage, and using the scale ... I always had too much movement (shaking) from the press to do a delicate operation like measuring powder charges on the same bench.
How do you get around this?

My two presses aren't fixed to the table top, but I secure the one I'm using at the time with 2 giant c-clamps (second shelf, on the right) to the front edge of the table. That room is actually carpeted, we laid fiberboard over the carpet and covered it with linoleum.
I found these Black and Decker storage shelves at Walmart and bought some for storing stuff and ammo. Powder is in the black plastic box on the bottom shelf.

You can see it on the left. The bench is made up of two 3/4" pieces of birch plywood with 2x4s glued and screwed in between. Finally have a bench stout as I need it. The bench is 18" deep as I find excessively deep benches just attract clutter. Better to keep it nice and neat like this. I have 2 Pro-jectors and a Rockchucker. A future project is to put 1/2" x 6" x 8" aluminum or plates under each press location to stop that wiggle that develops as the wood compresses. The black drawer cabinets I bought from Sears for ~25 bucks each. Worth every penny, and an open drawer works pretty well as a book or drawing table. Wish I bought 2-3 more. I am on a cabinet making kick and will use a bunch of 16" drawer runners to make a bunch of drawers that fit underneath this bench. Beleive or not, my garage wall and ceiling is smooth coated with nary a perceptible seam or drywall screw dent. |
