I just found a couple of NIW MSAR "STG 556" 30rd mags dated 08 and 09. Will they work OK in my standard AUG? What are the opinions of these? They lock up tighter in my AUG than the regular AUG mags. Springs seem a little stronger too. Plastic seems different, maybe "harder". And they seem to lock the bolt back when hand cycling. I will try them one day soon... Attached File |

They typically work, but not guaranteed. Iirc from back in the day when people were testing, cross-compatibility seemed to be 80-90% for reliable function of the MSAR mags in an AUG and vice versa. |

I perused the old archived thread on the MSAR rifles but found only ONE post talking about mags...basically they are cross compatible but something may need to be filed down on MSAR rifles to use standard AUG mags. Nothing about the MSAR OEM mags. So here is my contribution. Here is a better picture comparing an '08 MSAR mag and an AUG mag from 2024... Attached File MSAR on top, Steyr on bottom. The MSAR has a more orangish color. Attached File Mag bottoms are almost identical. MSAR on the left. Attached File Tops of the mags, nearly identical...MSAR mag is on the right this time. When I get a chance I will shoot some rounds with the MSAR to test function. Regardless of how they work, I dont think they will end up in my regular range or "duty" use since I consider them a curiosity more than anything. I consider the OEM Steyr (and MAGPUL) mags better made and a known 100% functioning quantity. |
